Now that I have my replacement tumbler I also have two batches of Gem Foam. From what I have read here these seem pretty much useless and a waste of time. I was wondering if anyone actually gotten decent results with these and what did you do different from the instructions?

Never heard of it, been tumbling around a decade. Grit, water, rocks, done.

I tried it the first couple of batches and it did absolutely nothing so I got rid of it. It's gimmicky, I think...

Timestamp 24:39 in case it doesn't start there like it should.

waterboysh, yes I have seen that video and his Tutorial series. And have modified the process with the advice Rob gives in the tutorial series. So now I am not expecting good results with National Geographic grit. Wish I saw these videos before I bought more Nat Geo grit. but I will use what I got then start getting my Grit from the Rock Shed. I also got the book "Modern Rock Tumbling" by Steve Hart. In that book Steve mentions a 5 step process, so I am hoping that some AO Polish from the Rock Shed for step 5 will salvage my first batch of rocks (1/2 Pound the came with the tumbler). I started out with the National Geographic Hobby Tumbler and later bought the Harbor Freight dual barrel tumbler. I really do not think the Nat Geo hobby tumbler is a bad tumbler, just as Rob said in his video bad polish on Nat Geo's part.

As Juggerguy (Rob) said in the video National Geographic Grit is good grit, but Step 4 is not a polish. Silica Carbrite is a poor choice for polish especially 1000 grit. You just will not get a shine with that stuff. I knew that before I started tumbling rocks. As soon as Rob said that step 4 was 1000 grit SC I went to the Rock Shed web page and ordered 3 lb Aluminum Oxide Polish. The step 4 grit should ok as a pre polish. So I will be using a 5 step process from here on out also.

I've incorporated a 1000 grit pre-polish into my cycles. I don't like the jump from 500 to polish.
