I sit through the Friday and Saturday HP zoom rock sales and both days they were showing the features of their new tumblers and also offering them at a discount to those attending the rock sales. If you are interested, go to the HP lapidary site and take a look. There is also a link to the zoom sales.

Here's the link hplapidary.com/collections/rotary-tumblers/products/rotary-tumbler-with-4-5-lb-barrels-capacity-110vThe details on the motor is was seems to be the most interesting aspect here and I wish they showed it with the cover off. "MOTOR – High Torque Low Voltage brushless DC motor - Motor is mounted in a direct drive configuration which eliminates all the historical issues with belts and pulleys eliminating the problems of fiddling with the machine to get the right belt adjustment. The brushless DC motor has a much higher torque than conventional tumbler motors and generates much less heat because it operates on low voltage DC power. Additionally, this eliminates the electrical hazard associated with the conventional tumblers." I wonder what the longevity of the motors will be vs. the standard.

Additionally, this eliminates the electrical hazard associated with the conventional tumblers." I wonder what the longevity of the motors will be vs. the standard. I also would be extremely curious to see how it’s set up inside. I’ve a lot of experience with brushless DC motors from my other hobby (hobby grade RC cars). They are sealed, require little servicing and since they do not have the brushes rubbing against the magnets, there is no physical wear occurring in the motor during use. They will last an extremely long time. They are far more efficient as well. An interesting thing about brushless motors is that they actually need a brain, or an electronic speed control, to work. Brushed motors run directly off a DC current, you could literally plug one to a 9V battery and it would work. Doesn’t work like that with brushless motors, they need something to electronically tell them where the polls are lined up, so that they know which direction to spin. The long term life of a brushless motor basically comes down to the quality of the bearings that are used. It could be a high-quality motor, but if low quality bearings are used, they will go out. Unfortunately, bearings are an area that are easy to cut corners with. Fortunately, they are relatively easy to replace with abec5 metal shielded bearings. The brushless motors I deal with are defined in ‘KV’, which is a complicated formula I don’t understand. Basically, A 1000 KV brushless motor will spin 1000 revolutions per amp of power. If you’re running five amps power, it’ll spin 5000 RPM. So they must be using extremely low KV motors running low amps, or gearing down the direct drive assembly…or both. I can’t see it being a very large motor, considering the room that they have. It doesn’t take much though, I have RC cars that go well over 70 mph with small, 3660 (36mm diameter, 60mm long), 3100kv motors and proper gearing.

If you've been still attending in the last month or so, are they still offering discounts on the tumblers? I was there last night, hoping for a discount, and not really a mention of them at all.

They moved on. They have mentioned their Black Friday sales. I bought some wheels last time. I would take a look at their BF deals.
