This is the bag of oil and slime I drained out of my saw today. IMG_2546 by mrk525, on Flickr This pic was taken at 4:30 my time. There was about 4 gallons of oil and snot mix. It was not real bad. How long do you think it is going to take to drain the oil to the point that I put the rig back in the large bucket that holds the slow, last of the dripping process? As of 6:00 it had already dripped about a pint of clear oil.

It should be done dripping at 8:37pm (your time) on 9/8/23...
It's dripping at a rate of one gallon in 12 hours. However, the rate will slow down as the weight of the oil decreases...so I'm adding an additional 4 hours for the "slow down"...

I have never drained saw oil so this is like guessing lotto numbers. It’s going to be done at 7:42 am your time. What do we get if we win? My science teacher used to throw Jolly Ranchers and gummy worms at us. 🤓

Draining wold slow as you go long and particles plug the pores in the paper. So I would say it will not finish until some time tomorrow.

I'm guessing it will be done at 5:35 your time. I've only cleaned out my saw twice in the last 2 months since I started cutting again. Instead of filtering I just let set in clear jugs and settle then pour off the clear. Seems like out of a gallon I only lost about three cups, then just tossed the sludge.

That’s essentially what I was getting at about it being done a while ago. I just muck, let settle, then add a lil new. I understand there is cost associated to waste, but it’s just not worth my time to get it all out.

This time Vegasjames got it mostly right. For the first time ever, the bag stopped dripping with about an inch and a half above the slime and after hours of no drips, I gave up and took it out about noon. Maybe being moved to the long term bucket will jostle something, but if it sits for a few months, I don't care. I have 100 pint bottles of oil standing by in addition to however many gallons I have set aside somewhere so I am in no hurry for that oil.

Maybe let your oil settle in a bucket for a while then decant the liquid off the top through the filter to reduce particles that can plug the filter.

I could decant it now for a good portion, but I am not hurting for oil so I will just let it sit until it stops being obstinate. I have more time than ambition.

You guys inspired me to clean my saw tonight so I got after it without too much mess but still had to throw the clothes in the laundry and get a shower.
The whole time I was mucking the solids off the bottom I reminisced about the story of my dad and his brother standing in the tar barrel when they were kids on the farm. That would have been in the 1940's and legend has it that they got a good spanking for it.

I have some old, ready for the rag box pants and long sleeve shirts that are saved specifically for big saw cleanout. After one use they never see the inside of the house nor the washing machine, straight into the trash.

I'm pretty good. Plus I clean before it is like peanut butter.

May I ask as a new oil-run saw owner, how often do you all clean your saw/oil out? I'm guessing it somewhat depends on how much cutting you do, but on average? And I believe you recover the 'good' oil and reuse? Thanks!!

On my LS14 that runs mineral oil, I scoop out/filter the oil about once a month due to the way it’s built. The saw platform is set in a giant tray that holds oil underneath as well and it weighs about 250 pounds so I just clean the oil I can access.
My Covington is enclosed and running BriteCut coolant. Never again after seeing how easy mineral oil is. I’ve cleaned it an average of once a year because the fluid doesn’t filter well at all. I just drain the fluid, scrape the solids and dump everything back in.
I’m switching it to full mineral oil as soon as I can. I figure I’ll filter oil in the Covington about once every 2-3 months if I’m actively cutting.

I have the everclean running when I cut so I have that advantage. It only filters the oil that gets to it though. There are places that the crap settles out because it is not getting washed towards the pick up. Every so often, depending on how much crud is in the slow flow areas, I will drain the saw before I go in for the night and squeegee the slime to the hole and the next day after work, pour the clear stuff off the top back into the saw and top off the remainder needed with "new" oil. The cruddy oil gets dumped into the oil filter set up and left alone until it reaches the top of the bricks. Then I pour it into gallon bottles.

Looks like it's time to clean mine again and it's been about a month. I keep it running every evening after work until bedtime.
