in a month or so i'm heading out to Ft. Davis / Alpine area to check out the Observatory. While i'm out there I'd like to do some rockhounding. Any suggestions for good spots out there?

Id be interested if anyone has any good places to check out that way too. My girlfriends dad just bought some property in Ft. Davis and we will be headed that way sometime next year. mikesgonepostal I was out that way not too long ago and stopped to check out some of the road cuts along 118. There was some decent stuff that I found in them so I brought a few buckets of rough home that I chipped out of the walls. We didnt get to do much rockhounding other than that though. While youre out that way take a trip to Marfa and stop in at Moonlight Gemstones if youre looking for any rough. They have a pretty decent yard with a good amount to check out.

I used to go there twice a year and regret not being into rockhounding at the time. Birding was the main daytime occupation. Regret the missed rock collecting opportunities now. The State Park there is really nice if you are RVing or tenting ... spots fill up quickly tho and reservations are needed.

Look into Teri Smith rock hunts. She use to do fall trips in the Alpine/Marfa area on the ranches out there. I highly recommend.

Teri Smith should be coming out with her Fall schedule. I believe it starts sometime in Oct. Most of the good agate is on private Ranches that she and another gentleman have access to. If I see the schedule I will post a link. Usually it's $50 to $60 a day that includes 1 bucket of rocks, after that any extra buckets cost more. I like it as there is usually 5 to 6 vehicles that go out, sometimes more. Sadly the two ranches that produces really nice Plume Agate are no longer open to collecting; Singleton and Walker/Woodard(adjacent ranches with very nice Red Plume). As you may know, crossing fences in West Texas is not a recommended practice. There is no BLM land out there, all privately owned or Park Land. Henry

Yeah. Didn’t really see anything interesting out there. We did stop at moonlight in marfa and pick up a few things. Macdonald observatory at night was nice. Davis state park has great views up top. Just passed through alpine on the way home. Good trip but no interesting rocks.
