Hello! My name is Zoe, I'm 19 years old and I've been rock tumbling for three years and doing lapidary for about two. I'm part of the Buffalo Geological Society and have been on two digs so far and plan to go on more. I started with a Nat Geo Hobby tumbler (worst machine I've ever purchased lol) and now have two lortone 33B's and a Hitechdiamond Slant Lap. One day I plan on getting a CabKing, but I'll have to save up for that. I have a particularly hard time with polishing jaspers, I never seem to be able to get as high of a shine as I can with agates. I'm also a bit slower than id like to be. I've used this forum for answers quite a lot over the past few years and figured I should finally just register so I can comment and post questions as well. I'm excited to be part of the community and hopeful get better and cabbing! I also have a rock tiktok that I use regularly, so if anyone wants to be friends on there just lmk

Welcome from Missouri. Some jasper can be a lot softer than agate so that may be the issue. I find a fair amount of red and brown jasper around here and some of it is just not worth trying to tumble because it is too soft. Even stuff that looks harder sometimes won't polish well.

Welcome from Southern Nevada.
Make sure that what you have is actually jasper. Many rocks get improperly named. For example, bumblebee jasper is not jasper, it is a calcite. Rainforest jasper is not jasper, it is a rhyoite. Etc.

Hi Zoe! I'm in Aus I had a tough time with jasper recently too. Black jasper came out nice (I've got no idea where it's from). Meanwhile, my mookaite jasper came out very sad and dull. I'm going to take it back a few steps and also let it spend more time in polish (last time I was in a mad rush to get stuff done because I had rocks in that batch I wanted to give someone as a birthday gift). I also found mookaite is a fragile soul, and chips very easily if it's bouncing around with bullies like big carnelians. I'm not sure if other jaspers have the same problem. I'm still learning about what rocks like to tumble together. Sometimes they don't, even if they have the same hardness.
