So I have a few small agates that I'd like to just face polish and other than a small lip where the bottom cut occurred, it's flat as flat can be and really not any saw marks that I can tell. So do I need to go back to the hard wheels just to have to work out the scratches? Can I just start with the 280 soft and work from there? When I see the scratches the 280 can smooth, this should be a piece of cake, right? Thanks!

I would try the 280 soft and see how it goes. If it needs a 220 you will notice it soon enough.

I have often wondered this same thing. It seems some slabs have nearly no saw marks and I wonder what wheel is a best match. I like to give the backs of cabs at least a little matte polish. I usually start with 280 soft and that seems to please me enough but I haven’t gotten any more scientific than that.

Lap it for a few minutes on a piece of glass and you’ll see if it’s flat as flat can be.
A pinch of 500 will do.
[edit]
I see you have a slant cabber, that’ll inform without the elbow grease.

Good thing is I can always go back if needed. I do have a flat lap on the cabber that I think is 280 perhaps...might even try that first and then the 280 soft. Just didn't want to create unneeded scratching (it's my nemesis ha!). Thanks! Lap it for a few minutes on a piece of glass and you’ll see if it’s flat as flat can be. A pinch of 500 will do. [edit] I see you have a slant cabber, that’ll inform without the elbow grease. I do still have the slant lap, but I'm not using it since I got the cab king. But the CK also has a flat lap on the side I forgot about. I leave for a 2wk vacation on Saturday so will put this on hold until I return. Thanks!!

Do you have a #360 disc on the end of the Cabking? I would use that then go to the 280.

I agree with those who suggest using the slant cabber for polishing flats. Hard to get a flat surface polished on a wheel rather than a lap.

I agree with those who suggest using the slant cabber for polishing flats. Hard to get a flat surface polished on a wheel rather than a lap. I watch Agate Dad on TikTok polish small agates like this on his wheels so I figured why the heck not try. This agate half is only about an inch and a hair big. i wish I had the extra room to keep all of the equipment set up...

I'd go at 280, worst case it will show you if you need the 220! Best case, it saves you some time.

I have gotten good at hand polish. One day i will get a cabber I usually start with 60 grit sandpaper all the way up to 2500 grit Rough side other side after final polish
