So I was browsing Facebook today and a group I'm in, DIY Lapidary Equipment, I saw someone post a picture that looked eerily familiar. That's my saw and my yard lol! It's the exact picture I posted on this forum of a rebuild I did of a Beacon Star TC-1 over a year ago. forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/thread/99965/beacon-star-tc-back-actionThis is the picture and they posted: I know there have been a lot of scammers making posts on that Facebook group lately but I guess they somehow pulled my picture from the RTH forum. (Edit: After further thought the images were more likely pulled from Google Images and not the forum directly) I tired reporting it on FB but doubt anything will happen. I've heard it's good to be cautious about what you post of the forum. I guess it's just a word of warning for everyone that the scammers are out there. At least it wasn't anything personally identifying, just quite creepy...

I’ve had pictures of mine taken and posted on lapidary sites claiming their own material 😂

goldfinder did you report to the admin? Darrell is a friend and former president of the Mt Hood club, he admins the group alone but has done pretty good. Some real good DIY ideas in that group sometimes.

There wasn't any chance to input any additional info when reporting to the admin. I just looked on that group and don't see the posting anymore so maybe the admin pulled it. It was just too weird seeing my picture being used lol.

goldfinder what was the person's apparent motive in posting it - was it an actual scam where they were pretending to sell that saw?

Yes I’m curious too. What was the content of the post? Claiming his own work? Trying to sell it? Or just showing DIY build examples?…

Hey Tommy, there wasn't any text in the post, just that picture of the saw. I think they probably forgot to add their scammer text to the post. The person who posted it definitely looked like a fake profile, they had no posts on their page at all. Maybe a bot? After more thought, I think the image was most likely just pulled from a Google Image search and not necessary from the forum directly. When "Beacon Star Saw" is searched on Google Images, this picture is one of the first few that pops up and links to the original forum thread. Luckily no harm was done this time. It seems as though scams are getting more plentiful on FB, both on the DIY lapidary group and a metal detecting group I'm part of.

I don't go on FB very often but when I do it's usually to look up something in the marketplace and that area is full of scams.

The DIY group is a no sales group, and the sales posts usually are gone pretty fast, so just posting the pics may be a way to try to get PM messages they can run a scam on.

Yeah, doesn't sound like a scam to me. Someone probably 'saw' (haha) the picture and thought it was nice, then decided to use it on their Facebook page.

Someone is totally trying to scam people with the pic of your saw. My girlfriend showed me a post on facebook of that saw for sale a few days ago. I dont remember which group it was in though.

Hope that helps! The DIY group is a no sales group, and the sales posts usually are gone pretty fast, so just posting the pics may be a way to try to get PM messages they can run a scam on. Hey Lee, I think you are right on with that idea. It's a smart way to lure people in without breaking the rules of a no sales group.

It’s probably jasoninsd he’s always trying to scam me Yeah...I'm still waiting on that check to pay for that bridge in San Francisco I sold to you!! LOL goldfinder - That had to be freakin' insane to see that picture pop up! It's too bad FB is so large that nothing will likely occur. Maybe if you had said their post was pro-Trump or "anit-pronoun" it would have immediately been taken down...no questions asked! LOL *Before the flaming starts...it was just a joke! LOL
