Hi, Everyone. It's been a long time since I was over here, but you folks are always so helpful. I have a 12-inch Lapmaster that has been a terrific workhorse in my shop. I recently discovered that I can use magnetic backing plates with different PSA grit sandpaper on each one for quick and easy switching between grits. Does anyone have a good source for these? Here's what they look like: I found a source in Europe, it seems. Great. $7.00 for the disc, and $120.00 for shipping. www.lapidarytool.com/magnetic-backed-plate/12-magnetic-backing-platesThis magnetic system makes changing from one grit to the next extremely easy, the magnetic base platen stays in place, while the support plates are quickly and easily changed during the grinding/polishing sequence. It can be used with Iron or steel support plate except the Aluminium support lap (Plate). I also found a source Stateside, but they want $17 each for the plate from lapidary grinder. It seems to me there might be other sources in the U.S. with a cheaper price than $17. There are a LOT of these out there in the 6-8" range, but 12" is harder to find. If you know of site for source this, could you please past the link below? Thanks in advance for your knowledge and suggestions. Last edited: 41 minutes ago

Howdy, folks. Someone suggested a DYI solution that might just work. I'm going to take a piece of thicker Acrylic and put on the bottom the magnetized sign material that people put on their cars, like Pizza Hut or other companies. We'll see if it works. I have a laser cutter, so cutting Acrylic is a snap, and the magnitized size material is super cheap on Amazon. Wish me luck.
I will report back after my experiments.

RRR Definitely report your findings. Facetors use phenolic board with diamond paste as well, if the sign board is not sufficiently magnetic to hold it perhaps drilling partway through with point removed from the drill so it cust a flat bottomed recess, then gluing in small super magnets to hold it down.

Great Info, Rockoonz. So one can take a smooth piece of phenolic board and all you have to do for polishing is add the diamond. Ew, I gotta try that. Great tip.
To clarify, I will be putting 3M film or very fine sandpaper on top of the Acrylic, not using the Acrylic -- which is far too soft -- for polishing. But I like this idea a lot. Is 1/4" thick enough on the phenolic board to try this, or should I go a bit thicker.
Thanks again. This is great.
