Agate beach in Bolinas: At the beginning I was looking for big pieces and didn't see any agate. Eventually I realized I should search close to the wave for those peanut size (or smaller) pieces. My family helped me pick some but soon lost interest and messed around somewhere else. Not anything spectacular, but it was fun to pick up the agates and give some of them to the kids who came over to see what I was doing. ----------------------------------------------------------- I also visited Redeo beach, which is close to the Golden Gate Bridge: From nps.gov, "Watchful beachcombers can find a rainbow of pebbles dotting the shore. The vibrant colors are the result of the most common rock found in the Marin Headlands: bedded ribbon chert, which you can see exposed nearby at the south end of the beach. Traces of iron in the chert are oxidized in different amounts to produce a wide spectrum of colors, including red, green, yellow and black pebbles." It is amazing that the whole segment of the beach is full of these small colorful pebbles. Some of the relatively interesting finds:

Beautiful finds! I find rocks like you found at Rodeo Beach along the Sonoma Coast all the time. That brecciated looking one is quite common and takes a beautiful polish. I love to just scoop up those colorful pebbles and use them as cushioning in the 33B. When they come out of polish they're like little treasures!
It looks like a successful days at the beach! I'm currently polishing some beach finds from a beach further north from where you were and will post pictures in a couple weeks. Did you keep those? Are you going to work them up at all?

Yeah the rocks that I took photos are among the ones I took home. I feel I could have fun there for three more hours and my adorable kid started to whine and the sun was setting 🌉 Last year when I joined RTH, I posted the pictures of some rocks that I hounded from some Sausalito harbor in this post (which seemed to be from the same source as the colorful pebbles I hounded from Rodeo Beach). I tried to tumble some of my finds back then but the cracks kept coming up and eventually walnut-size rocks were reduced to peanut size, and one of them is still in stage 1 with my Rebel 17. This time I only picked those tiny rounded pebbles in blue/green colors, and plan to dump them into 120/220 step directly. We will see how they polish.

Thanks! Looks like a great beach to visit. Plan to spend hours there! Then when you want a break, go to Luigis in Cambria for some good food.

At the beginning I was looking for big pieces and didn't see any agate. Eventually I realized I should search close to the wave for those peanut size (or smaller) pieces. Congratulations that looks like a nice haul of oil agates! I remember my first time there and having to think small and train my eyes to see them. After a few years away we went back last year and even knowing what to look for I still carried home a few too many little black pieces of basalt

I needed to rely heavily on the sunlight reflection to see which is agate and which is not. Since the agates (I could find) are so small, I had to sit on a blanket, lean forward, and sift through the wet sands just in front of me trying to see something. Then I slowly moved my blanket to another location. My son would occasionally pour a pile of wet stones in front of me with his beach scoop, which also helped. I really enjoyed the immobility rockhounding on a beautiful beach. Would love to come back one day.
