I am a somewhat older retired gentleman with a new three month old hobby. It appears, that based on my research, I will have to travel to rock hound the really colorful exotic rocks and gem stones. I already have four tumblers running full time, but no finished stones yet. My first tumbler is currently on week three. I likely have two or three more weeks to go, maybe more.
My biggest hurdle seems to be rock identification. I feel like I need to take a course in geology. If anyone has suggestions as to how I might learn rock identification I would appreciate your comments. Finally, if anyone can suggest places in Alabama that a newbie rock hound might find something worthwhile I would appreciate any and all suggestions.

Welcome from Missouri. When you figure out how to identify rocks, let the rest of us know. Seriously, the best thing may be to just keep looking at the pictures that people post here on the forum. There are a lot of people here that know an amazing amount about many different rocks and minerals. There are so many different types and variations that books don't do a great job. Although there are some books with limited geografical area that are good. I don't know much about Alabama but someone will.

Welcome from Southern Nevada.
Leaning how to use Mindat.org is a great way to find areas to look for rocks in your area and a good starting guide for rock identification.

I already have four tumblers running full time... Hello and welcome! You are gonna fit right in here I actually did take a college geology course to fulfil the science requirement and it doesn't help me a bit now! Mostly all they talked about was volcanoes and sediment layers and synclines and anticlines

Welcome from Georgia! You are a little over an hour from me. If you want to go to rock hounding sometime we can try to schedule a meet up somewhere.

Welcome from NW Florida. If you google "Rockhounding in Alabama", you'll find a couple of sites that should get you started.

I would jump on that.☝️It’s always cool when members are close enough they can get to know each other in person. A number of people here have been able to do so. And, welcome!

I've had the pleasure of meeting at least 6-7 members from here on 1 trip. Its fun and I'm always looking for a new place to rock hound and its nice when members offer a place to go or even better, take you there.
