Hey folks, here’s an odd rock I found in the Tennessee river. I was looking for nodules or quartz good for marble making, so basically I look for nodules that have heft for them. You want a rock that weighs more than it looks like it should. I found a few of these nodules and brought one home to cut. Boy was that a surprise. Right off the bat the water in my saw turned a dark grey and my saw very rapidly cut though it. It has pieces of metal on it and the following day, the metal rusted. Any help would be great. I’ve been looking online and just can’t come up with anything like it. I’m guessing it may be slag or something though I don’t know. Many of the nodules had odd pits that looked like when a pancake is ready to flip

I agree, it does look like slag.

Thank you! That’s exactly what I was looking for, and the examples in the page are 100% what I’ve got here. This area did do some sort of metal work though my knowledge on it is poor. Rockwood Tennessee at one point made cast iron stoves, and after the Second World War many things were sent here to be scrapped, mostly weapons. This is why every now and then a machine gun shows up in the area. The local kids would occasionally obtain various weapons (disabled) and would play with them in the woods. Kinda a fun side note.

I'm glad that helped you!
I can imagine all sorts of stuff are buried around there

rolleyholeman1 Without giving out any "best fishing hole" kind of secrets. where? Herriman area has had Iron smelting in the past and there are coke ovens at Dayton. Also, many places have burned coal. The white blebs look like limestone so I am guessing Iron furnace slag.

The water is starting to rise again so I don’t know how much time is left.

Rockwood and Harriman both had Iron and coal close by.
