i've had my 2 barrels on one of my lortone qt66's stop rolling twice recently. both times taking the barrels off and putting them back on corrected it. i oil regularly and am stumped as to what is causing this unless i have overfilled them. is there anything i need to check? i'm not mechanical so give me kindergarten level advice if it's very technical . it's been rolling for 8 mos. straight now and i've never had any problems before. but if there's a problem i'd like to get it corrected now before i burn the motor out. kim

USUALLY THAT PROBLEM IS DUE TO OVERLOADING-TOO MUCH WEIGHT-THE MOTOR AUTO-SHUTS DOWN..HAVE HAD THE PROBLEM MYSELF-AFTER A PAUSE AND TAKING OUT SOME STONES THE LORTONE WILL RESTART AND CONTINUE--HOPE THIS HELPS..

i've also had a similar problem, check your rollers, sometimes a little gunk will really increase the drag enough to slow or stop your barrels. and check your barrels, too, if there is anything sticky or gunky, how's that for technical?

Hey Kim, my Lortone occasionally does the same thing. Every three or four months, I take a piece of 600 grit sandpaper and littlely hold it against the rollers while it's running to take "the shine" off. I then do the same thing to the barrel. It's especially important to rough the barrel one it's been allowed to slide on the rollers as the surface will become shiny and glazed. I no longer have any problems.

ok i used the sand paper on the rollers and barrels, took off the belt guard and yuck there was black gunk all on the right side of that thing which might have been slowing the belt down. i cleaned that good. but i do have one more question. how would i know if the belt was too loose??? it seemed ok to me but that's because it hadn't fallen off and was moving ;D. and where is this adjustment nut?

oh and i moved the barrels to the other qt66 and swapped the ones that were a little lighter over. the heavier ones are rolling fine on the other one so i'm inclined to think its this tumbler. it seems to be going a little slower than the other tumbler though they are just alike.

kim just losen up the motor nuts and slide the motor to tightin the belt but dont make it too tight they should have some play in the belt when you push on it,, i leave my belts so loose you can take them off without unscrewing the nutts on the motor

why does the bottom of the lortone 3# barrels become concave after a few days? is this just signs that there isn't a gas build-up?

jackson that's what mine does when there is gas - suck the bottom of the barrel inward and i'm assuming at some point if i don't release the gas it goes the other direction and blows the top off.
update on my stopping barrels - they stopped again after i had sanded the rollers and barrels so i moved the motor by loosening that top nut and moving the motor over to the right a little. it made all the difference in the world and it is rolling at the correct speed again. thanks everyone for helping me with that. without your input that tumbler was doomed because i would never have figured that out.

JKowalski33,, The bottom of the barrel gets an inward look (concave) because of vacuum from the rocks cooling. If it was a gas problem the barrel would bulge out or the lid would loosten or maybe even pop off. Some people heat the barrel and rocks in hot water to make sure a vacuum is created whick creates a very good seal. This technique will only work on Lortone "type" barrels. It doesn't work very well on barrels such as the Thumlers Mod B which are constructed differently. Tom

I just recently had that problem happen to me and it was because my belt got stretched out, I got a new belt and my problem was solved. Tami

so is the concave effect a good thing then tom, like does is aid to the grinding process or something? or should open the barrels to remove the vacuum...?

I had the same problem as creativeminded and a new belt fixed the problem. Evidently, my old belt had stretched too much and even tightening the belt all the way didn't help.

I don't think the vacuum hurts anything.
