I really like the cut. When it is set, it will be dynamic. Great job dude. It is called a cabochet, and I use cuts like that for intarsia. Really good job.

Once I learn how to do wire-wrapping, then I'll be set to work on this, when I can afford some gold wire. I'm not going to mess it up in the mean time though. Someday, hopefully, I'll have a picture of it finished. It's almost too pretty to wrap in wire so I have to think about it for awhile, maybe do some drawings to get ideas. so what is the difference between cabochet and cabochon...? i thought that cabochon meant polished but not faceted? comments?
i'd love to learn how to do intarsia, too!

Krazy, a cabachon, traditionally is rounded. A cabachet has faceted components, either enhancing the natural shape of the stone, or like John did it. Intarsia is a little different. You will need a reference point and a flat plane for grinding. It starts in the center. Four, five, six, planes are cut on the edges. Boundary material is cut, and each piece is glued on and planed to the next side. This is repeated around the center stone. The outline pieces are the cut and glued, finishing each one like the internal pieces. The piece is then flattened on the bottom. The top is either done in a cabachet, or cabachon finish. I will tell you, Intarsia is some of the most dynamic material I have ever worked with. If you go to Lapidary Journal.com, they have a tutorial on Intarsia which outlines the entire process. I do not think I could have written a better tutorial. It is a freebie on their page, and I do reccomend subscribing to Lapidary Journal. They have some amazing stuff.

i do subscribe to the Lapidary Journal and have admired the "how to" projects, especially the intarsia one (which part three is coming out in the next issue). tho i don't think i'd go to all that trouble for a santa ornament!!
another interesting article in this latest issue was about how they determined "Rainbow Calsilica" was not a naturally occurring mineral....it even mentions Bill Atkinson considered using a piece in "Within the Stone" but he had reservations about it's authenticity.
didn't mean to digress, here..haha. thanks for the clarification, Doc! KD

thanks all for eggin me on again hahaha,, its you guys and gals that keep makin me try harder with this so thanks,, hey doc thats a new design its called a newBchet hahaha ..cher i would go simple with the wire wrap that rock i cut from for all the pendents was so nice it made itself pretty,, its just my opinion but i wouldent go too poofy with the wire the stone stands on its own,, i couldent believe how nice they looked after polish it had allmost a 3D affect in it---well anyway thanks all ill keep trying hahaha
