Well, I am in the process of cleaning out the garage (still). I put a new roof on it about a month ago now, but inside it was a total mess (leaves, moss, damp - the lot).
Anyhow - since its had a new roof on a while now its all dried out, so I figured its time to get the place going again.
Sweeping up the mess (I do a bit of woodwork here and there and the router and table saw are the culprits of a lot of sawdust) I get these spiders scurrying about trying to make their escape.
I killed 3 or 4 of them with the brush.
What can I say? I hate killing them, but their webs were everywhere. Within just a couple of weeks they can cover almost every item in there with cobwebs - tools, rocktumblers, fishing kit, BBQ - everything.
I'm fed up with their mess - but today - after deliberately killing some of them - I feel totally guilty.
Rest in peace spiders.
I guess they have a tough life, and my garage is one of many millions of places they find comfort in - only to be killed.
Then again - maybe this planet is one of many which lifeforms like us find comfort on, only to be killed.
Poor little spiders.
Andy.

Andy. If you were smaller, and the spiders were the dominant species, you would be extinct. An interesting study between wolves, and predatory cats. Habitat changes are theorized to have produced multi species socialization. Spiders and insectidae have never posessd that capacity. I, also, do not casually terminate any living creature, or plant, in needless fashion. Even with the two brown recluse bites I have recieved. Expressing compassion as you have, shows a conscience. My Bengal cats, given proper stimuli, will remind me, of their lack of domesticity with total confidence. In Floriduh, we learn, if it moves, crawls, has shiney leaves, makes either ripples or bubbles, give it room to strike! My fair bride, from politically correct left coast Kalifornia, would venerate the smallest creature untill they tore her up almost lethaly. It took her a while, and she suffered and has scars. When we went back her prior associates were horrified when she casually terminated black widows, brown recluse they call them fiddle back spiders there, and any unidentified insects. You gotta do what you gotta do. Sleep well.

Yes Doc - that is true - "If you were smaller and spiders were the dominant species you would be extinct". Insects are - relative to ourselves - representative of absolute and total vicousness. A spider - in particular a spider, over say a snake or a lion - would indeed kill me without a second thought. A wasp or an ant would be (in my mind) of similar simplistic murderous ways. I wonder what would happen, if, after 4 million years at the top of the food chain, spiders realised they were being a bit nasty? Would they too have to ask themselves "Should I really Kill Humans? ?" All is smooth. Andy.

Andy, a cat can be calmed, a dog, can be soothed. After observations of insects and wild animal life. I am not sure viscious is the term. Insects, and wild animals are thorough. The brown recluse that hit me on the foot, was effective. The venom was amazing. It bit and moved on. Why I do not know. I never saw it. I had the wound diagnosed. Humans are vicious, both in compassion, and emnity. The animal, insect, does what it can as it needs. Humans do what they percieve, and creatively. The strong survive, and I guess that is what it takes to live on an evolving chunk of something that was something else. Kinda cool.

I don't have a bit of a problem killing a black widow, brown recluse or a scorpin - nasty creatures. OPPS, I forgot the big, brown, flying roaches - don't mind killing them either. But, anything other than that, I won't kill, even a snake.
I used to clean house for a lady that had a pet spider. She told me to never knock down his/her web that was in the kitchen window. Also told me this spider would drink water out of a spoon. I thought she was full of it until one day I was there and this spider comes cruising across the kitchen counter. She filled a tablespoon with water and put it out for the spider. The spider came right over to the spoon and drank water out of the spoon! Blew me away!
I have a few cobwebs in the RV, esp. in the cabinets I don't get into often, but have never seen a spider. I do have lots of stinkin' ants though! Those big red and black ants, and those tiny little sugar ants. Seems for everyone of those little devils I kill, five more appear! And, of course, outside there are fire ant mounds everywhere. Don't mind killing those buggers either. Got into a fire ant bed taking pics of those rocks out at the ranch the other day and they nearly ate me alive. Those little suckers HURT!

I spoke of this before, but it seems to have credence now. We have a spider problem at work. I don't like to kill things that don't bother me but the webs were getting out of control. I went on a spider killing, web whacking spree. The next day, I was covered with tiny bites that itched like crazy. Bruised myself scratching at them. I figured, tit for tat. They had to do what I had to do, make a stand. The webs outside the store I leave untouched. They are really very beautiful and intracate. If the mall owner wants to take them out, that's his thing

I'm struggling to get my point across - perhaps i've not made it clear - I dont know.
The point is.
"DONT KILL ANYTHING - ITS WRONG".
I can go around killing everything in my path - or my garden. I can kill because I have the power to kill - but its bad news - these creatures are the same as us. I'd rather kill a terrorist than a spider or even a wasp.
Its definately WRONG to kill even the smallest **lifeform**.
"She filled a tablespoon with water and put it out for the spider."
I bet she did too. That is essence for certain, and i'll be betting money that she is going somewhere better.......
If only I could help my spiders - but they make such a mess and spoil where I work. I cant be comfortable in a place full of webs.

When you die Cookie, they may well want a chat with you those spiders you killed................
My three or four deaths today may ask me when I die why I killed them - they only wanted a bit of shelter.
When they died, they curled up their legs around their bodies - it was a dreadful thing to see - DREADFUL.
As I say in the title of the thread "Poor Little Mites".

"DONT KILL ANYTHING - ITS WRONG".
Well, I have to strongly disagree with that statement. It is not wrong to kill a black widow spider, wasp, brown recluse or any other critter that poses a threat. I know people that dang near died from a black widow bite, bee stings, etc. It's one thing to just go around killing critters for the fun of it, but entirely another matter to kill a critter that has the ability to either kill or seriously injure a person.
I firmly believe in self defense whether the attacker be human or critter.

Oh Andy, When we pass, we'll all have a chat. But all we can do is our best. I strive for that. Try to weigh things out, look for meaning, do "the right thing". You are on th the right path, assuredly. You have no evil intent in your heart. We all fall short. But my karma is good and I know that. Mine will be a good place. I only strive to to stay on the path, maintain. Obviously, you do so as well. Don't beat yourself up with questions, follow your heart and meditate on the mysteries. You will find an answer. Gratious, I'm flakey, but that's OK too.

Andy, I agee. Thou Shalt not Kill. Violence is the weapon of the ignorant. The end never justifies the means. Never. Even the sacrifice of one's self, for a cause, another life, a principle. There was a scorpion and a frog. There was a river to cross and the scorpion asked the frog to ferry him to the other side. The frog told him I am afraid you will sting me. The scorpion convinced the frog he would not sting him and the frog helped him across the river. On the other side, the scorpion stung the frog. As the frog was issuing his last breaths he asked the scorpion, "why did you sting me when you promised me you would not?" The scorpion replied, I am sorry my frog friend, I am a scorpion and that is what scorpions do. Andy, if you found a passive way to curtail spiders, crickets, snakes, and other "vermin", I would adopt it into my life as best as I was able. As more is learned, I would not be complacent. I am sure, if I came up with a similiar device, you also would do the same thing. I am sure I am not alone in this. I do not believe it is a weakness to wish there was a better way to live on this world. Education is the key, and we all have a great deal to learn. I hope we learn the important lessons quickly enough.

I don't think I would be overly concerned as I doubt that you killed a endangered specie I would bet that there are enough to take over in your garage just give them a couple days and they will

to be or not to be................
That's what life is all about. I have spiders living in my house, they catch the odd fly that dares coming in. So spiders are my friend. Do they bite me than they shifted the goalposts and voila they are "not to be". The spiders in my house are safe from those bloodthirsty songthrushes that I love to listen too as their song is like an orchestra morning and night this time of year " Spring" doomed or blessed, makes no difference. We are all going to die. Accept that as fact and keep on tumbling as long as you like (or can). Some cat may come along and snuff the light out of the eyes of that songthrush. A truck may come along and takes care of the cat and so life has been for many moons and shall go on long after I have said my final goodbyes.
Don't get depressed , take every day as it comes and start a new song ....good morning , good morning , how are YOU today etc etc.

I respect everything that is alive and when I get a black widow or a fly home I will catch them with a fish net and will take them outside. I will avoid stepping on snails at the sideways or simply will return them to the bushes on rainy days. There had been some times in which I had to kill ants moving to my kitchen and I really felt awful. If I'm in the absolute need of killing anything I will do it in the fastest way that I can in order to minimize their pain. I just try to treat them as I will like to be treated if I were another type of lifeform. Just the way I've decided to live my life! :-)
