My daughter and I have been learning the hobby this year. I found your web site last night, and I was impressed with the rock samples page.
Several of the folks talk about running the 60/90 grit for X weeks, recharging the grit weekly. Is this as simple as adding a tablespoon(s) and resealing the barrel? Or do you reload the barrel, checking the stones while your at it?
Is there considerable mass loss when you run coarse grit for several weeks with recharging?
Also, what is a good maximum stone size for a 3 lb. barrel?
Thanks! Kevin Kirby

i completely reload. there is mass loss at this stage. if i didn't add rough when i recharge, i'd end up with about half the weight of what i started with by the end of this stage.

Too much work to reload the works, I just open it, maybe rinse a handful of rocks to see how they're progressing. Then check if the slurry is too thin/thick, etc., chuck in some more grit, and thoroughly clean the lip of the barrel so the lid fits on nicely. The first two stages are where the rocks get a lot smaller - maybe 30% is removed in coarse grit - so you will need to add more rough when needed. Keep your rough around 1", and see how things progress.

I use a vibe and it works much faster. I rinse and recharge every 12-24 hours. Sometimes yhat means wasting some grit, but I just can't keep my hands off the stones for too long. And in coarse with a vibe, the"muck" builds up quickly. At the very leaset, more water needs to be added evry 12 hours.
