Although a 6lb barrel has a 6lb capacity-At 2/3 full the "tumbling weight" is actually 4lbls(this includes the water and grit and anything else you put in) Too much weight has many negative effects on equipment and processing the rock--slowness(causing more time to complete stages and quality of product ) wear on the motor(causing premature breakdowns), etc..A good idea is to always weigh(tumbling weight) your barrel before tumbling...MY OPINION>>

bird i use to weight my barrels but they never weighed in at 4 lbs when 2/3 full - always over so i quit weighing and filled 'em 2/3 full and kept going.
i just got some hematite from the rock shed. it is the heaviest rock i've ever seen. so i know i'm not going to be able to fill to 2/3 full on this type rock. i would like to know what others have done to get it to 2/3 full with the hematite. and do y'all suggest busting it with a hammer or sawing it? my, my what a heavy rock!

Hi Rocky,
I just put my hematite into SC 1000 this morning. I broke up the hematite with a 3lb. crack hammer and a rock chisel. I was able to fill the 3# barrel 2/3 full. Since hematite is so messy to work with, I have been doing it alone, and using pellets to bring the level back to 2/3's at each stage, in 3# barrels. I have had great results at each stage so far.
Hope this helps,
Scott

at what stage did you start adding the pellets scott? usually i don't add pellets until the 3rd stage but i might have to add them earlier to the hematite.

I started using the pellets at the 2nd stage. I usually do not use pellets until stage 3, but since I elected to do the hematite alone based on info from this board, I started at stage 2.

pellets are the answer--keep the weight at 2/3 volume capacity but use pellets at(ALL) stages...
