Hello..I am Pho, a new member from Texas. I have just finished running the polish stage for the second time on a bunch of rocks of mixed hardness. Both times a few of the rocks (I think some are rosequartz but not sure of the others) are coming out with scratches. All of the road rock/river rocks polished just great. I had 6 large Apache tears in there as well and they did not polish but did come out with scratches on them. Any suggestins? I had the barrel a little over 1/2 full (3 pounds) with just water and polish in it and ran for 7 days each time.

1. Did you use plastic pellets?.. 2. Sounds like you have hard and soft stones mixed(no no) 3. Did you run a a good pre-polish?--maybe you need a 1000 grit stage... 4. Experiment

Hi Pho, Welcome to the board! What part of Texas are you from? I'm a Texan, too, all my life.
Sounds like Birdseed's advice was right. You definitely need to use pellets when polishing, and shouldn't mix rocks of various hardness.
Hope to hear more from you.

Hello birdseed and bwalters.. Yess..I do have hard and soft rocks mixed....could have been what the problem is. Yes..I do have the plastic pellets in there too. bwalters..I am from close to College Station,,,,near Lake Somerville. I am running the stones again in a pre-polish....but only the ones that were scratched up...see if that helps.
Thanks for your quick response..I do apprreciate all the help I can get..

Pho, Are you using pellets in your prepolish stage, too? And what grit are you using for prepolish? I'm still learning also so appreciate all the info I can get!
I live in Medina, Texas, the "Apple Capitol of Texas", in Bandera County, the " Cowboy Capitol of the WORLD". Surely, you've heard of us!!! HAHAHA! Medina is only 'famous' one day of the year when we have our Apple Festival. Bandera County has produced 8 national rodeo champions, hence the county moniker.
Good luck with your stones!

Not sure what size grit I'm using....it all came as a package with lables on it. I did use the plastic pellets in the pre-polish stage and polish stage both. I am running the apache tears and dthe gem stones again together as they both came out in the same condition. Can anyone recommend a good book for learning what rocks can be run together? I realy have no clue as to how hard a rock is...or which ones can or cannot be run together. Thanks
