I am running a load now and have a little less than 1/2 a barrel of stones....question: Is it ok to run with such a small load? I've also heard one should add powdered laundry soap or sugar to a load...what's up with this? Sorry to be such a pest but am very new to all this and finding it to be a little confusing at times....but I do promise I will learn..and will post some pics as soon as I get a load done.... Thanks again.

depends on what stage you are on. in 60/90 i try to keep my barrel at 2/3 full at least but by the latter stages i want lots of pellets for cushioning. so if your barrel is that empty on stage 1 i'd add some more rough and if your farther along fill it to 2/3 with pellets.

Pho,,,, If you don't have enough material in your tumbler you won't get the proper "tumbling action". The barrel has to be either 2/3 or 1/2-3/4 full. If you don't have enough of the same material you can add pellets to it to get the proper volume. As "rocky" said if you are in the 2nd- polish stage you better use the pellets. There's one disadvantage of adding plastic pellets in the roughing stage. The pellets act as a coushion and it will take a lot longer to get through the rough. One way around the pellet problem ios to add some rocks of the same or softer hardness to the load. You can throw in pieces of "junk" rock such as flint chips or any other material you may have hanging around. You "can" thicken the load but that can get messy when you start to rinse the rocks off. Something I do to thicken up the load is to add some old dried out slurry. As long as the slurry was the same grit stage as you're in now it's a lot better then sugar, etc. and it won't cost you anything. Hope this helps,,,,,, Tom

I too run my loads 2/3 full, and if you don't have enough to fill the barrel throw in some plastic pellets to make up the difference. I have a container that I some very small rocks in to help fill my barrel when I need to for the first stage, however, in the other stages I add the plastic pellets as the rocks grind down. Tami
