I just recieved a warning from a friend of mine about a new virus. Apparently it is extremely damaging. It comes with an header A Card For You, or A Virtual Card For You. This new virus apparently, when rebooting the computer, erases the main operating line after mailing itself through the safe list on e-mail. This totals the hard drive. According to the e-mail I recieved, the person heard about it on CNN, and it is causing deep concern in New York City so far. There is no prevention, nor fix for this situation. Mind you, I trust very little I recieve from the internet. I have not recieved "A Card For You" neither. If I do, I will delete the e-mail untill I know other wise. This is heresay, I heard and I am saying. I do not know anything pro or con on this so I am wary.

From what I can find about this, it's a hoax. Here's some links to the info. www.sophos.com/virusinfo/hoaxes/virtualcard.htmlus.mcafee.com/virusInfo/default.asp?id=description&virus_k=98893www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusinfo/virus.aspx?ID=9725I'll guarantee you, it never hurts to be cautious, especially when it's something you receive in an email. Especially if it tells you to "delete a file" on your computer. Never trust any email! Always do a search for the file name they want you to delete. There were a couple in the past few years that had everyone in an uproar telling you to search for SULFNBK.EXE or JDBGMGR.EXE and if you found it on your computer, you had a virus and should delete it. NOT ... unfortunately, no virus will be taken care of as easily as deleting one file. Both of these are a part of windows os, not a virus. Fortunately, they were not integral to actually running your computer. Thanks Doc, for being aware and caring enough to mention it to your rockhounding friends. As I said, you can never be too cautious. [glow=red,2,300] ~ Cher ~[/glow] pages.prodigy.net/bestsmileys1/signs/RockOn.gif [/img]

too true, if i don't recognize the sender or if the message header doesn't lead me to believe it is a valid email, i delete it. it's sad that there are people out there bent on destruction and chaos...the internet has become such a valuable tool and conduit for information and recreation, too. i enjoy this board a lot and would never have "met" any of you had it not been for this piece of technology....a shame that a very small percentage of lunatics try to ruin the world for the rest of us all living on the planet.
i'll burn this soapbox next.......

Yep, the folks that create the viruses and send them off to screw up everybody's computer need to be tarred and feathered.
I caught a virus when I first got on the net, took the computer in to get cleaned up, got home, put a floppy that I had used in and gave myself the virus again! I was too dumb to know that the floppy would be infected too and would reinfect my computer. Expensive lesson to learn!
I now have Norton Internet Security, two firewalls, and a server with some real serious viral protection equipment that cleans the virus before the email goes into my mailbos. Got some really good anti-spam software too. Because of all that, I really don't worry about catching a virus, but I am still pretty careful about what kind of email I open and I never open an attachment unless I know the sender.

#1 rule, NEVER open an executable in an email (.exe).
