Okay as everyone no doubt knows, I have been gifted with a Rock Rascal 6" trim saw. I dutifully read all the coolant back posts and I still have questions. Specifically, the RV coolant...has anyone actually tried this? I see that some people just use water, however everything I've read about the rock rascal seems to call for cooling oil. I'd hate to mess anything up. I guess I'm looking for advice and big nod. Mama's minerals said the oil coolant for $16 a gallon. The RV coolant is a cheaper bet if it'll work. HELP!

Helo Herm,
All I can say ... is that I have used baby oil for years and I have never had a problem with it at all.
Have a great weekend,
John

I used the RV antifreeze for a while but have since switched back to my water/borax solution. I saw no advantage to using the antifreeze.

Thanks you guys. Like most people I guess I'm a little scared of new territory. But I just went and drilled some rose quartz so now I feel that power tools and rocks DO go together. I really appreciate the advice.

Hey Herm, I use nothing but water with a little borax for my drilling as well.

with a six inch you can use water and a water coolant like "Diamond Cut".........Lortone recommends oil too, it has a lot to do with the blade you have. i am using a MK-303 at the moment (Diamond Pacific) and it said in the description for use with water. and this has lasted a few months now......and i have used it quite a bit.
see ya, KD

I did not like Cool Tool. With sporadic use, the water evaporates and the Cool Tool turns into flakes and wedges in the bearing. My combination unit has exposed ball bearings for the shaft. I need to use oil/coolant. I have been using Pennzoil 10W20. Cleaning the stone after cutting is an issue. Dish soap works real well. Napa store brand oil is Valvoline and I want to try 5W20 instead of Pennzoil. It is cheap and last forever. I am not worried about fire hazard as I have not seen sparks from my cuts. I wonder if baby oil/mineral oil mixed with motor oil is a good combination. Both are from petroleum and should mix.

hey doc thats not a bad idea could make it cheaper with a mix and the mineral oil would thin out the motor oil --but does anyone know if the motor oil is bad to get on your skin for any amount of time? i been useing the min oil because it cant hurt ya shoot people drink the stuff hahaha but who knows what the heck there puttin in the motor oil might grow another head hahaha----and maybe thats why my trim saw bearings are makin noise when i dont use it for awile im gonna hafta take a good look at that thanks
