I do not know how this poll thing works, so I will give it a try.
I was at a local gravel pit last sunday looking for Lake Superior Agates, and meet a guy who invited me to a local rockhound meeting.
I went to this months meeting tonite, and I'm going to join.
I learned so much already.

Hi Chris, I recently went to a local rock & mineral show and discussed the possibility of joining the local club. The only value that I found was that they take sporadic rockhounding trips. Unfortunately, they take them for a week or two at a time and go several hundred miles away rather than locally on a day trip. I don't have the luxury of being either retired or independently wealthy, so I decided against joining. I did learn a lot from them just talking with them at the show, however, so the jury's still out as to whether I'll join.
I'm not much of a 'joiner' generally.

Rhonda, I feel the same way you do...not a "joiner".
I did find several local places via the net to hunt and made friends with several people while I was at those place. This really helps!
When they go on other rock hunting trips locally, I've asked them if I could tag along. They may not go locally very often, but at least we live fairly close to one another and I won't feel so out of my element.
I'd love to go to Arkansas for quartz hunting, but with my animals, and lack of funds at the moment, it's out of the question. So local trips are the way to go for me!

Hmmmm...does this group count as a club? I would join one if I could find one close enough to me....

Rhonda & Emerald, I'm not really a "joiner" either. I'm kinda shy. But for a membership fee of $10.50 for my family per year that my club charges, how could I go wrong. It is many years till I retire, but the info I learn now may come in handy then. Pho, I guess you could call this group a club. ;D When is the next meeting? Hehehe Chris

I have been thinking about joining the local rock club. But, between the kids' activities- fishing, swimming, soccer, floor hockey, etc; and work, I am not sure how to fit the rock club into my schedule.
The local rock club has a small shop that is open on weekends that for a small fee, you can use their tools. I was thinking this would be a great way to learn how to use the various tools, laps, grinders, etc.
I bought a regular bench grinder today. Still thinking of the excuse that I'll say to my significant other! I still need the rheostat to bring down the RPMs. But, I am a step closer to pre-shaping my rocks--woohoo!

Cool Cal! There is no local rock shop near me, but using their equipment sounds like an affordable way to go. I've entertained the idea of opening a shop simply because there MUST be other rockhounds in my area. I was as a rock shop in northern Michigan several months ago that had an old claw-foot bath tub full of tumbled stones. I wanted to climb in and have my idea of a 'treasure bath'. My husband wouldn't let me though... Rhonda

I would join if the club wasn't located some 200 miles from me. I found out that the show last weekend was about 5 minutes from my son's house ... next year, hope they have it in the same place.
