Hi -- I'm posting this on the off chance that someone here might know whether there are any interesting, easily accessible, short stop rockhunting sites off of I-55 between St. Louis and the Chicago suburbs?
My attempts thus far to internet search for Illinois sites have been unproductive.
Thanks!

Being a long-time Illinois resident I can tell you that the best rocks to be found in Illinois are those brought by the UPS driver. I think that illinois has galena and gypsum, but we can't tumble those.

I just moved from Illinois after spending two years in the Champaign-Urbana area. I've heard of some geode collecting sites in western Illinois around Warsaw, though I never had a chance to go there myself. I've also heard there used to be some fluorite sites. So it looks pretty bleak, but don't give up. I ran across this web page that might give you some leads: www.isgs.uiuc.edu/faq/gg-faqs/GGQ46.htmlHope this helps. - Robert

Wow! Thanks for answering, it was looking pretty bleak for a while.
Robert, I found exactly the same information you told me, about the geodes, and the website. The geodes extend into MO so I've read about them in the MO rock trail book. I'm really surprised that nothing has turned up, at least about Southern Illinois. Somehow I had the impression that down in the hills there were good rocks and that continued to be true as you head east from that area. Not to mention that there's so much mining in IL.
No biggie, I just have to drive myself to Chicago tomorrow and I've gotten in the habit of trying to time my pit stops for areas where there are -- uh -- rocks.
Yes, this is sick.

The people I asked in Chicago suggested Minnesota or Michigan.
