Hi all. So here I am in western Maryland/Wash.DC on a mini Vacation(wife's here on business) and instead of seeing the monuments and everything else here, guess what I did yesterday. Yep. Went to a state park in search of some local rock to bring home. And I'm happy to report I was very successful. Lots of really cool looking quartz with different colors running thru it, some grey rock with dark lines, and some serpentine with quartz bubbles sticking out. The serpentine in Calif. is too soft to tumble, but this stuff is really hard-can barely scratch it with the quartz. I wish I had a camera with me. I came across a boulder of serpentine sticking out of the ground that looked like a whale surfacing for air-it was huge-and the quartz bubbling out of it kinda looked like barnacles. I also found a piece of quartz the size of my foot. Needless to say, I'm gonna have to ship this haul home.
Then there were the rangers who came by to see what I was up to. I thought they were gonna make me put them all back, but they said it was okay, and drove off thinking us folks from Calif are pretty wierd...well...
Anyway, today I'm off to see the sights.
later, Ed

That is so cool Ed, and nice that the Rangers didn't stop you from taking the rocks. Shame shame for not taking your camera, go buy one of those cheap $5.00 ones so you can get a few pics.
How do you know it was serpentine? How do you identify it?
Have a good time!! You can ship those rocks to me if you want ;D

Hey Stoner, Sounds like something I'd do, too! I'll bet most of us would.
I'm interested in the gray stone with dark lines. Are they swirled or patterened similar to how pet. wood would look? A friend of mine picked me up a stone the other day that is very brittle, almost flint-like, with darker gray or black lines through it. It's gorgeous, but I can't determine what it is...
Any guesses?
Have a great weekend, y'all! Rhonda

Hi Cher. Serpentine has a sort of greenish/blue color to it and it usually is layered, as it is a sedimentary rock(I think). This stuff I found here in Maryland has the greensand the blues, and also has a gold shimmer to it. When I get home I'll try to post some pics.
Hi stonedagain. The grey rock really doesn't have a pattern to the black lines. It's pretty hard, so it should take a good shine.
