That is a stone grinding wheel. Diamond wheels are with an hub like a bicycle wheel. The second picture is representative of most diamond wheels I have ever seen. The only other difference I have seen is islands of diamond grit symetrically placed on the wheel. These are used for sharpening steel. The other type has lateral cuts across the surface. This makes for a more agressive wheel of the same grit. The cuts allow for more cleaning of the diamond during the operation. The wheel you got could be a specialty wheel. One used for crankshaft grinding, or sharpening knives for the paper industry. Whatever the case, if it cuts well by all means enjoy the daylights out of it. If it works, it is what you need.
