I wake up sweating. I dream I have a priceless emerald to cut. I am most of the way through all the cuts but the final 1000 grit lap. On my last cut through I drop the quill down on the lap and the stone cracks through the middle. I had not placed the stress point under the dop correctly. I not only destroyed a mega dollar stone, it was a priceless archaeological find from an obscure shipwreck, like the Atocha. I had the chance to facet the Atocha emerald for Mel, before he passed away. Shane had contacted me. I declined. A stone I can cut, an heirloom, or priceless piece of history, I am very reluctant. So there it is, I am cutting it, I am feeling things are going ok, I relax and make a mistake. The mega dollar, mega carat emerald turns into dust in one moment. I want to die and wake up sweating, shaking, and cannot get back to sleep. The whole rest of the day is ruined and I cannot get the dream out of my head. I go to the shop so careful I make more mistakes than usual. I look like a bozo. My shop is based on absolute customer satisfaction and the absolute best no compromise I can provide. I do not allow mistakes, or let things slide. Some dreams really suck.

Mel taught us many things, but, mainly he taught us that for those who dare to dream and persist...
"Today's" always "The Day"

Mel was really cool. I would see him almost every day up to six months before he died. He would come to the shop and say Today is the Day!!! I remember when he got Key West to suceed from the nation. We became the Conch Republic. What a trip. He was a real example to me. When I first met him, I didn't think much. But after a time I got to get to know him. I met Shane after he had passed away. Shane is a nice guy, a lean, healthy gentleman who looks you in the eye when you meet him. When I first started in this gig, Mel would bring me some Atocha coins to wire wrap for him. I thought it was charity for me at first but they really caught on. I was almost homeless, hungry, and pretty discouraged. He would come up to me and say the infamous Today is the Day! I hated that. I used to hang out with Miller Collins of Boz Scaggs who was a street piano player at that time. He never found sobriety, I happened upon it. Mel would come to us and say, You can do it! I started thinking I could. Maybe I could, if I do more, learn more, and keep trying. You see me in the posts telling folks You can do it! That is in memory of Mel, and the encouragement he gave me. He never gave me anything, or changed my diapers. He showed me how to get it without stealing, cheating, whining, or feeling sorry for myself. Near the end, he would come by my shop and we would say, If you are not happy today, what day are you waiting for? I miss that man.
