I would like some suggestions regarding tumbling Obsidian as it pertains to the following:
Do you need to use filler material such as plastic pellets in ALL of the tumbling cycles?
What is the best type of polish to use with Obsidian? I've read varying outcomes with Tin Oxide.
As always, thanks in advance for your input.

My humble opinion is as follows: 7 days in 60/90 no pellets 5 days in 120 with standard amount of pellets 5 days in 500 again std amount of pellets. 4 days in 1000 ditto on pellets. 4 days in Tin Oxide I use 50/50 pellets to Obsidian. Whalla...

You can run Obsidian in the 60/90 as long as you like, but it is a bit softer than a lot of stones so keep an eye on it. I think 14 days is the most I ever ran it. I have a lot of it out here in Arizona, so It seems I almost always have some in one tumbler or another. Good Luck!

Banjo, Two questions ... Do you have an idea of what the hardness is of it? Do you ever mix it with anything else?

I think the hardness is 4.5 - 5. Someone can correct me if I am wrong. It is nothing more than volcanic glass, so what ever the hardness of glass is will get you in the ballpark. I may run it with other stuff but at the polish stage it goes solo. No mixing.

this is just sorta a vague question on pellets. for example, do you fill the barrel with a little less then half rocks, then add pellets to bring the volume to between 1/2 to 3/4 full? or do you fill it 1/2 to 3/4 full of rocks, then add pellets on top of that?

Good question, hope I'm not doing it wrong but I have mine about 2/3's to 3/4's full including rocks and pellets. I guess I figured you have to leave some room for the tumbling. I'd think if you have it full, it's not going to roll at all as the barrel is turning.
