Howdy rockscateers! I'm just wondering, what could I do if I wanted to polish the chunk of petrified wood below? I don't have any macinery available to me except for a standard bench grinder that I can get SiC wheels for up to 220 grit. Could I hand sand it with SiC paper? Is there any way I could hand polish it? The bits that are already glossy look so cool, I would love to have the same effect all over. However, I do want to keep it pretty much the same shape that it is now. I know it would probably be a HUGE task to do by hand but I'm willing to give it a go if someone can give me some ideas of how. Thanks. Mike

Hi, Mike. I like to polish the stones on their natural surface, they look great. It seems your stone could be polished very well, as it has no concave areas. I polish my stones not by hand (I tried it with SiC paper and it's useless, especially for a such big rock like yours) but with my flat lap. I use some "diamond pads" stitched on a rubber support. I use the following steps: 100 or 200 for start, then 400, 600, 800, 1800, 3500, 10000, "gloss". You can see this in my thread which is now close to yours.
Great wood, I hope you'll post it when it will be ready.

Mike, This is what I use to polish large pieces of jade: I made it out of a old stainless steel sink. It works really well. I will polish it for nothing if you want to send it my way. I know shipping would be pricey from down under. Let me know. Tony

Hi Mike, On here was some one a while back that used a angle grinder and a rubber disc to polish a realy big piece of stone
I thought it was Napharite (above ) but it must have been someone else sorry I cant remember,

Hi, Mike, I've seen something that might be very interesting for hand polishing your boulder. It's about some diamond covered sponges. They resemble very much with the paralelipipedic sponges used in dish washing but they are harder and one of the faces is covered with some diamond resin. I didn't use them but I think they are appropriate for polishing natural surfaces. They come in more grits. Scroll down into this page to see what I'm talking about: www.arc-rom.ro/dischete_diamantate.htmlAdrian
