Well, last week was supposed to be our yearly family spring trip to Florida. Everything started out great as week and a half ago we set out for a 1,200 mile drive south. We arrived in Florida on the 1st, and settled in for a few days of sun and the Disney theme parks.
I decided to call home on Monday to check on my parents. Dad was supposed to go in for some tests with his heart and other things - he had had the angioplasty surgery done about 10 years ago and had not done a checkup since then. Well, he went for the checks and they said that he was so bad that they would not let him leave the hospital and that they were going to do a quadruple by-pass, both corroded arteries, a new heart valve, and install a pace-maker, all at the same time. This was not very happy news to have while being so far away from home.
So, My wife and I decided it would be best for me to fly back home alone while the rest of the family continued the vacation, that way I could at least be there for Dad (and Mom) until my sister arrived also. He went into surgery for about 12 hours on Tuesday, and I got there just after he came out. The surgery went great and he came through with no bad effects. I got to spent the next two days with him before I had to fly back down to Florida to help drive the family back home. I was a nervous wreck on the way back wishing I could be there with Dad, helping him through all of this - I am just glad that they caught everything in time before he had something more serious happen to him(stroke or heart attack). He has for the most part been very healthy and active, so the doctors said that his recovery will be easier than most people. It just sucks to see him so down right now, but I know that he will pull through it in time.
We got back home last night (Sun) about 10pm and I went straight back up to the hospital. The doctors said that Dad would be able to come home as soon as tomorrow, which is really good news. It will be a long recovery, but he is determined not to let it get him down.
So that was my Good/Bad week. At least I was able to be there for both parts, even though it was not the way I wanted it. I think I am more tired now than the vacation would have left me.
I apologize again to Tonja(LadyT) for not being able to get with her and meet. I was really looking forward to it - but we go down to Florida often and will try it again the next time!!
