Hello everybody, I want to buy a new camera and my thoughts are on an Olympus SP 550UZ one. I like the great 18x optical zoom , but mostly I like its wide-angle capabilities (28 mm equivalent). Does anybody have already this camera? Any opinions/alternatives? Thank you, Adrian

I have an Olympus but not that one ... it sounds awesome though. Have you done any searches Adrian? Before I got mine, I spent a lot of time trying to decide and found several sites where current owners gave reviews of their cameras. I have the C-2100 Ultra Zoom, the last model to be made with image stabilization. When I bought it, they had already come out with their latest model and discontinued mine but I didn't care, I wanted that stabilization. Here's a site that helped me a lot if you haven't been there already. www.dcresource.com/reviews/olympus/sp550uz-review/index.shtml

I can't remember the website, but do a google search for your camera and model then add review. Thats how I purchased my last camera, laptop and other things. I want to read reviews of what others have had to say. I did a quick google search and found this review www.dpreview.com/reviews/olympussp550uz/Google.com then Olympus SP 550UZ review and read away. You will see nit picky reviews and so on, and you may even find where to get it at a terrific price! Good luck!

Thank you both, I've already made the "diggings" and the only thing I didn't like was that some reviews say it focuses very slow in low light conditions. Now I have an Olympus (C 5500 sport zoom) with the same problem (I've lost a lot of great pictures with my cats because of that ). But i have a friend who has a Canon S2IS and complains about the same problem. I begin to think this is a common problem for this category of cameras. I had the occasion to hold a professional digital camera and focused with it in very low light. The speed was incredible, but I don't want to spend so much on a camera. If I had these money I'd invest them in stones . In addition, that one was very big. Adrian

Adrian, I have a Sony DSC-H1 with 12x zoom and I love it. I can use the automatic setting or choose manual settings, whick is a real nice feature. It's about as close to a SLR camera you can get without the hefty price tag. I bought mine when they first came out and the newer models have come way down in price, around $299 here in the USA.

Thanks, Ed. Are the batteries usual cilyndrical ones, or does it have a special accu'?

It takes 2 AA batteries and I'm still using the original rechargable batteries that came with the camera, almost 2years old.

I, too, have a Sony DSCH5 and love it. It does well in Macro mode, has an anti-blur feature, takes decent video *good for capturing that cat action* is fairly easy to figure out *I'm technologically challenged* and battery life isn't too bad. It's not great in low-light or no light situations (translate NIGHT shots...). You can get some lens accessories that will increase the zoom feature even further. Lately I have seen the basic camera online for about $350.00.
ADVICE - Get at least a 1 gig card. Get a second battery charger and some re-chargeable batteries and carry spares with you.
I plan to post some rock photos later on today...
