Ya know,,,,ya just have to feel bad for all those rock merchants out there. They just sell rocks and rock related materials. Period. All day long. Never realy getting to enjoy what they are selling. We, on the other hand, take the time to realy enjoy and appreciate what we are working with. We get our hands on the rocks, feel them, nurture them, and most of all respect them. So when the day is done, the rock merchant is sitting in his chair counting his money and WE, are sitting around enjoying our hard work and life in general. WE, the rockhounds who actualy work with the rocks are a happier bunch of people IMHO.
So, the next time you are out in your work area, holding that special rock in your hand and admiring it's beauty, think about all the rock merchant is missing out on.

I don't see it that way at all. Every rock shop I have been to in Il. and Wi. the "rock merchants " are working their rocks also. Gene at the Gem Shop feels them, nurtures them into beautiful works of art. Pete at Sticks and Stones makes cabs and jewelry. The shops I have been in, in Chicago, they all are working the rocks they sell, and enjoying them. Also, what about our member here, nmoynx? He sells and works, enjoys his rocks. What about Bearcreek, and Banjo to name a few. The "rock merchants" you talk about, I don't feel sorry for them in the least, they are in it for only the money. I don't think about those kind of "rock merchants" at all. I always think about Gene, Pete and if they would like what I have done.

There are rock merchants and rock merchants. Some of them just buy and resell rocks just like any other stuff. But there are rockhounds which collect and polish for themselves and occasionally they sell part of their work either for the pleasure of gathering at a rock fair, or for covering a part of the expenses of their hobby.
All the respect for both categories, and my admiration for the second one.
I think the ones you're talking about are from the first category.
I'm not in the second category, but I wown't say it's impossible to sell sometime at a rock fair, maybe just to see how is appreciated my work.

Nothing is better then putting a smile on a young persons face. I think all kids love rocks. Can't charge for that so I guess I won't be making any money at this hobby. That is fine by me though......MrP
