We had a nice steady rain this past Sunday. The kind where it just drizzles, and drizzles. My older daughter came back from her church youth group, and saw me outside enjoying the rain. She came outside with me, and we sat there on the porch for about an hour and a half just talking. It was so enjoyable to be with her, and I know she felt the same. She'll be going off to college this fall and though she won't be too far away, she still will not be at home. I miss her already. Being with her that day was a moment I will treasure.

That sounds like a great time Gil. Up here, Sunday would have been titled the rain, the flood, and the wet dog. Whoops!

Gil-
Sounds like you had a great time being alone w/ your daughter. I'm gonna die when my daughter(s) go off to school. In fact, they are not going to grow up, I'm just gonna lock them up and not them go anywhere!!!! Ok, they're not teenagers yet, so ask me in a few years if I feel the same way.

I also can appreciate your story...I work on a human relations commission a few years ago...our president was a Psychologist and very well respected older woman...one day walking home from groc. shopping she got caught in a down pour...wet to the bone...at first was upset for getting so wet...but, she decided to enjoy the rain...she said I stomped and jumped in every water puddle I could find and when I got home I was ecstatic with "little kids joy" ...then I filled my tub with warm water and soaked for an hour...just relaxing...reminiscing...and sipping on my wine...she said what a wonderful way to end a day...
What a sweet and honest lady...

Rocks are great fun. But, it's time with people that we love and simply enjoying the gifts God gives us, that is what really matters at the end of the day.

That's very cool Gil. Having met you and your daughter and having been to your house, it's easy for me to create an image from your words. It was time well spent, you're a good man.

It is a great story! I remember those times with my dad and still have them here and there now. She does treasure them like you and she will treasure them even more as the years go by. Sandy

My daughter went to college last fall. After getting her all unloaded and settled in her dorm, we were saying the good-byes out front and I bawled like a baby. We live less than 2 hours away, talk to her almost daily and see her fairly frequently. But I tell you, I still miss her like crazy.
Last week we had a death in the family and were together for the family visitation and funeral. About a dozen people were coming out to my Mom and Dad's after the visitation so my daughter and I were going to pick up some pizzas to take out because nobody had eaten. We didn't call ahead, just walked in, placed the order and told them we'd wait. They had a juke box and I went over to see what the choices were. I bet I hadn't played a juke box since I was in college (I'm sure they still played 45's the last time I played one). She thought I was just looking, she didn't know I was picking. I picked some old southern rock (Skynyrd and Molly Hatchet, which she likes too by the way) and she said she wanted to pick a few too. She picked some new stuff which I have heard but don't remember who sings. At any rate, we sat there and sang along, and talked and laughed and generally had a great time. It was just the pick-me-up I needed though I'm sure management was glad when we packed our circus up and moved along.
We have a son too that I love dearly but there's just something special about Daddy's Girl. And I'm not at all sure where the last 19 years have gone.
Later,
The Max

My daughter didn't go off to college, but when she moved out last year, I walked around the house feeling pretty empty inside, even though she was still in town and I still had my younger daughter and step-daughter at home. It's hard to let them go! She is taking care of herself fine, but I still worry about her everyday. I wonder if my Mom still feels the same way 26 years later! LOL! The smallest everyday stuff is usually the most meaningful (sitting on the porch talking or picking up a pizza)!

About 3 years ago, my dad, my uncle, myself and a couple of mates from Sydney flew down to Tasmania and did a 7 day 80km hike through the Tasmanian wilderness. I stuffed up the ligaments in me knees part way through and was in heaps of pain. Nothing to do but walk. Even though I was moving at a snails pace and was at times a few kms behind everyone else, my dad walked with me the whole way. We just talked and talked for hours. I was in my late twenties and he was in his mid fifties. It was a time I will always treasure. It didn't feel so much like he was my dad as my friend. It was really cool especially as for the last 6 years I have lived an 11 hour drive from him.
Dads, spend time with your kids! You never know when your opportunities will run out!

Yes, I feel the same. My daughter was the last to move out after both boy's left, it was about 5 years ago. I cried for several day's at the thought of her not being with us. I treasure every moment I get to talk to her or see her. She got married a couple of years ago to a great guy so I know she is in good hands. Ed M.

Yep, it really sucks when they cut the apron ties, especially when they do it ungraciously and ungracefully. The little booger!... However, it is fun to give their girfriends cool rocks for their birthdays. They just don't know what to think!
