well i hit both the rock show and petrified forest and of the 2 i had a blast at the petrified forest. the rock show had noooooo rough rock - lots of collectors minerals and mostly jewelry and beads, some equipment and supplies. but now at the petrified forest there were bins and bins of rough so i did get some things. i will probably go back to the rock show tomorrow and have a last look around and make sure i don't see something i just have to have like that plate carved from something with that long quill like fossil in it - the name escapes me right now but those plates and platters were awesome. and i got to see the food table like llana showed us last year. will have to wait until i get home at my own computer to show what i got today as i'm using the hotel's computer. but it's been fun!

Hey Kim,
I love the Petrified Forest!
We took my son there roughly six years ago and went through 12 rolls of 36 exposure 35mm film. I thin the film processing cost more than out fuel for the entire 1100 mile trip from Ulysses, Kansas through the fore corners, canyon de chelle, petrified forest, grand canyon, monument valley, moad national park, dinosaur quarry, and back home again!
I am going to have to get back there with my digital camera ... I have the capability of nearly 300 photo's ... so, it will definitely be much more fun!!!
Enjoy,
John

Haven't been to the Petrified Forest since 1964. My, My, My! It couldn't possibly have been that long ago. Ron

I haven't been to the petrified forest since the late 80'. Love that place and would love to go again sometime soon. John, you went to some of my favorite places! I spent about 6 months in 86 traveling all over New Mexico, Colorado, and Arizona seeing all the indian ruins, canyons and such. Monument Valley is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. I love the desert and when the sun rises and sets over Monument Valley, all the colors are just awesome. Kim, the guy I got the Mex Lace from had a whole drawerful of slabs out of petrified wood from the petrified forest that he got from an old lapidarist. That guy got them all from the indians that had collected it before it became a national park. Some of the most beautiful pet. wood I have ever seen. He has a BIG piece - about the size of a child's head that I really want! Have no idea what the weight of it is - but it's $50 and I really can't afford it now. But if I ever can and he still has it, IT'S MINE! Don't ya' just love rock shows? Too much neat stuff, never enough money though! llana

now i'm talking about the mississippi petrified wood forest - not nearly on the same scale as the one y'all are talking about but quite wonderful still.

Sorry Kim, I didn't know MS had a petrified forest. Where is it exactly? Only place I've been to in MS is Tunica County. I was driving along through these endless fields of cotton, when all of a sudden these great casinos jumped out of the ground! Spent a couple of days there. In fact, I went to the opening day of the Circus Circus. The place was absolutely mobbed. It was kind of funny because they had 1300 slot machines, and there was actually a line at most of them! I mentioned to the wife that something was missing. All those people, and no horns or whistles going off from people winning. Apparently they wanted to pay for the casino that first day! Went back to the Treasure Bay and won a few bucks and had a good time.

Rockyracoon - those long "quill" like fossils are probably Orthoceras and probably come from Morroco. They are dazzling for sure but somehow they have too much of a "factory like" appearance, even though they certainly are not. But they sure look great as a polished table top of the material I saw once several years ago. About a 3X4 foot slab. Morroco is loaded with them, I hear.
