This is a thing I made to use when I go rock/crystal hunting. If the soil is sandy or dry and loose, I can screen the material. Then when I get home..I can put my rocks on the screen and wash, sort or whatever....I also use this thing when I need to clean/change my tumbler barrels..works great..just dump the material onto the screen..wash it off with a hose and whalla...all ready for another load. It sure has come in handy. Just wanted to share that with you guys... This is a load of crystals I still have on it...sorting and cleaning them. Pho

Are you cleaning pony beads as well or is that the stuff you use as pellets? Nice colors - especially the green stuff on the ground - *sigh* I miss that - specially now that we're expecting another 10 inches of snow Waaaaaaaaaaaah My mom uses something similar to screen her pile of compost

Sands..if ya wanna make one..it measures 2 ft by 4 ft and I used 1/4 inch screen. It gets a little heavy if you have to move it around a lot. When digging for crystals, I just shovel the material onto the screen...the dirt falls out and leaves the rocks and crystals..lot better than doing it by hand. I have it bolted together so I can take it apart, put it in the car and go on down the road, and it sits up in just a few minutes....

You should add some wheels to lug it around like a wheelbarrow maybe?

Big wheels, like the kind used on the back of some lawn mowers so it would roll easy. Very cool idea!!

I really like that! But do you just move it around to avoid getting a big mud bog under it? Thats my problem, I use too much water and turn the yard into a swamp by the time I'm done dinking around. But that is a killer little set-up. I gotta do that.

I move it around in the digging area to find more goodies.....and in the back yard when the area around it gets too soaked.... I recovered over 10 gallons of crystals in just a few hours with that thing...so it has paid for itself time and again. Thanks for all the compliments on that..it was just a matter of using something to recover more material....easier to use a shovel than a hand....

I might add that the 10 gallons I got in just a few hours was from their tailings....I have yet to go to the main mine..but will do so next time I go there...

Hey Pho that's a unique set up you've made!! I use something very similar in the warm months but have to go through a fiasko in the cold of winter. Banjo,,,,, I use to use a lot of water too but have found that a very hard spray does the job using MUCH less water.I made a spray out of nozzles we use to use on the lube systems for the big drives we made way back when. They have a 1/8-27 male pipe thread and can be addapted to a piece of ss tubing.I use a 1/2" ball valve for a shut off and it's attached to a ss washing mach hose. If you want one send me your addy and you got it. tcknkk@adelphia.net Make sure you put rockhounds or something rock related in the subject box or I won't open it.I just got through curing my computer which had a terrible "viral infection"!! Ya, I'd love to see that hoser downer contraption too.
Pho-
One other great point about your setup that didn't get mentioned was the "back" saver. I've been dumping mine out in the gravel and spend 20 minutes or so bending down. This system lets you pretty much lets you stand in a natural posture. I'm sure doing the work you're doing, you're probably standing there for an hour or more.
thanks for the tip, I may have to rig one up.

That is a very clever idea, thank you for sharing. the crystals you collect are they all the white or do you get some nice clear ones as well? Tami

Some are clear..some smoky...some white..just a big mixture of crystals in all shapes and sizes. They do tumble very nicely too.... When you tumble the clear ones..they will remain clear but will come out rounded.....they are like the prize in a crackerjack box..never know what ya gonna get...
