I have a pre-polish and a polish - they are both the same product but one is fine and the other is ultra-fine (I think). Is this what pre-polish is - I read that it should still technically be grit - I think mine both are titanium dioxide (not sure) but I do know that they're both the same product but different sizes - After only 2 days they looked really shiny already - I will put them in polish but I have a prepolish that is 600 grit as well, but I used what came with my tumbler - I may have to experiment.
Should the polish & pre-polish be the same product?

Becomes a matter of preference. I did not use the prepolish state for a long time and my results were ok...Lat summer I noticed that I was not getting the desired shine, so I am back to using both; sometimes 1/2 week each will be sufficient.

I use tripoli (very fine powder) as a prepolish- It runs for 2 weeks and the rocks look great when they come out- I use Aluminium Oxide Polish (from the Rock Shed) as polish and they should (they still got a week and a day to go) be even better- But I also have a Silicon carbide prepolish (either 500 or 1000) that I have not tried yet- next batch is gonna go into that to see if it works better than the tripoli-

Totally depends on the quality of shine that you want Tweety. If you want the best shine, run the pre-polish stage too for at least 5 days. The last batch I took out with the agates and amethyst went through these stages. Patience was wearing thin by the end but got a nice "wet" shine on them.
60/90 - 2 wks 120/20 - 1 week 500 - 1 week 1000 - 1 week Aluminum oxide polish - 5 days Cerium oxide polish - 5 days
