Hi all, Didn't I read somewhere that this was an inexpensive Hobby? I got my first tumbler a month ago. Since then, I have bought books, more than 100 lbs or rock, rock hammer and chisel, several buckets of grit, and have ordered two more tumblers and a dremel tool. And I haven't even gotten my first load out of polish yet! I must be doing something wrong. Trish

Inexpensive? I don't think so, must be some other hobby you're thinking of. ;D Buying tumblers and grit .... $200.00 Buying rocks from friends and eBay .... $200.00 Buying tools to work on rocks $1000.00
Finished batch of beautifully polished stones .... priceless.

HA HA HA the expense is in the beholder- I mean sounds like you got 3 to4 hundred invested so far- some of the people on here have 10s of thousands and still buying! Me just one tumbler (for now) a small trim saw, 20 pounds of rock (plus the 100 or so I already had) couple pounds of grit- ummm plastic pellets, borax, sieves and buckets- Oh geez it does add up fast- This is a sickness!

Hi Arkie,
First, welcome to the board!
When you get the tumblers, trim saws, flat laps, vibes, slab saws, faceting equipment, spare parts for all of your equipment ... along with extra grits, polishes and fillers ... paid for ... you can then just pick up rocks off of the ground and use them!
Enjoy ;D

Hey Arkie, at least you have a tumbler and can put those dollars to work. I'm buying rocks against the day when I finally have a place to set-up a little shop.
Right now my purchases are collecting dust on the floor of the closet. My wife thinks I'm insane, and she's probably right. But I figure I'm saving these rocks from an ignominious end underneath a few inches of asphalt in a road bed. I have to justify these purchases somehow.

It all ads up Indeedy it does. Once the machines are in place and paid up - its time to do some digging for cheap rough and grits. (80 grit is where all my money goes). Get a good supplier or friend (theres folk on here who have rough dirt cheap for example) and it isnt so bad. KD said it - its a slippery slope allright!!! Oh how they shine Mark

Right now my purchases are collecting dust on the floor of the closet. If there is enough dust on something, will it form it's own rock? Dust I have , rocks I don't... still looking though

Connrock-
OK, I just blew my Pepsi all over the monitor and keyboard after reading that post. So if you're reading a rock magazine. or looking at rocks on Ebay and your wife comes into the room you hurry and hide it, or close the screen, right? I can just see it. Wife says, "Hunny, what are you up to, are you looking at those rocks again???" Your reply, "no hun, just looking at naked girls online again, (she puts hands on hips, tilts head a little sideways,) you continue, " honest, I told you I would never go to those rock collecting sites again, really, trust me, rocks are ugly, dirty, they don't do anything for me anymore, I've got better things to think about!!!!!" Is that how it goes?
Chuckle, Chuckle.....

I'm always intercepting the UPS guy so my husband doesn't know what I'm up too. I was just thinking the other day about how I debated over the price of my first tumbler , should I shouldn't I. (3 more tumblers later) I thought to myself at least I'm using my own found rocks..... Ha. It sure is convient having cool rocks dropped off on the doorsteps, when there not time to go rock hunting. Now I tell myself, at least I haven't went out and bought something really expensive, like a rock saw. But I do have them book marked along with different blade sources. Wonder how long I'll be able to tell myself that. This is the first hobby I got into just for the fun of it, not trying to make any money off it and I really would like to keep it that way. (ruined some of my other fun past times that way, just turned them into another thing to add on my to do by a certain time list) But now that I have some shows coming up, I keep debating this with myself.

I called up my dad and had him put an order on his credit card so hubby wouldn't know I figure I can pay my dad cash and hubby won't see it since it doesn't show up as an expense through the bank account. I can always tell him I needed money for lunch or something (only about $30) - It's like having an affair with rocks, trying desperately to hide it from the spouse who wouldn't understand why we need outside fulfillment (ie purchased rocks)!

LMAO- Tweet I can see your hubby- "did you buy more rock?"- No hunny just having an affair with the UPS guy- No I know you got more rocks! My wife just puts the hand on the hip and shoots that look! I tried just ordering some stuff and not telling her- Well the word PI$$ED OFF is just the begining! But she has softened up a bit- We have been talking about the next batch of rocks- She has a few things she wants to get but as she points out too often- I can't keep up with all the stuff I have already! I brought up the subject of the grinder and she just said- We'll see! (meaning- not this year dear- but maybe for christmas next year)
