Yes, it is an inexpensive hobby until you keep adding and adding! I started adding to my collection of rocks, shells and petrified wood a few months ago...not only did I spend all my mad cash, I ended up having to have my hubby pay my last 2 ebay bills. He says Your addicted to ebay and rocks! I just tell him no I'm not! I just want more and more to add to my collection. LOL! I'm sure if I were buying more hand tools or power tools it would be okay...LOL! Now, I just have to work off the debt...LOL!

If there is enough dust on something, will it form it's own rock? With enough time and pressure, yes.

Its not too bad, but all that is in the perspective. Try collecting Winchester Bolt Action 22 Rifles or Japanese edged weapons....it pales in comparison.

I not sure about that have you taken a look at faceting or cabbing machines? Gives Me sticker shock, but i keep going back, hoping prices will start looking better over time. Bet a nice catana would set you back a few bucks too!

Yes a nice Howard Clark L6 Bainite Katana polished by Summerchild and mounted would run me at least 6 grand and a 24 month wait...at best.

Too bad we weren't into rocks before we got married. Then we all could have saved a little money by only having to buy half as much I can see it now, don't care what you look like, what job you have, your family, religion or anything else, if you just love rocks as much as I do ;D LOL!!!

Think about it. Is anyone else awed to find that there is this tribe of people who are echoing one's own thoughts and feelings about something that's so objectively bizarre as this? This forum, as is being discussed in another thread, is less than two years old and its membership has been increasing by leaps and bounds. The increase? Mainly people who are coming in with an addiction that started almost before the first tumbler arrived. How weird is this? Yes, it consumes resources. How amazing that people are so drawn to it that they pursue it even though they feel the need to hide it from their spouses. I hope that is mostly because the tumbler folks feel strange/guilty over spending the money, and that the reality is that they can afford it, and that their husband/wife would love the stuff that they made, in any event. As others have said, it is remarkable that this board has remained consistently congenial and positive throughout its existence, and that its members are so diverse but drawn to this interest. Once again, I want to thank all of you for that unique experience.

Stefan your wife should be pretty happy that you're into this stuff now that you've won that wonderful KrazyCab!
Hubby won't tell me he's proud or likes the stuff I do, but once in a while he'll tell me to show that thing I made to so&so. (that's the only way I know that he,s proud of what I,ve done). I've got about 13 pounds of rock coming in the mail & once the 10" of snow that we're getting again melts (if more doesn't fall) I may only have to get grit - how much (tablespoons) of grit are there in 1 pound? I think the reason we're trying to hide this stuff from our significant other is that, well, we're buing rocks, something that (to them) we just walk on and can be found basically anywhere not realizing that the nicer stuff just doesn't "grow" where we are (or where I am anyways so far). Hopefully I will be able to dig up some nice ones at some point...

Yes she love that EYE OF THE STORM! Can't wait till it gets here! SHe likes the stuff I do but feels I spend too much time and money on it (in my defense I do the laundry whenever I'm in the shop!) She just can't justify the $1000 I want for a grinder- Maybe for Christmas (I told her I would make all kinds of Cabosteffys and she just asked Where the rock was gonna come from (she got me there) Oh well- I caught her going through the Ocean Jasper chips this morning- I asked what she was doing and she said "thinking" Hmmm wonder what she has in mind?

Or two Jaguars, Stubby. My wife is a good one. She is the one that suggested we drive 45 minutes to the Gem Shop and rummage through their basement of rocks, she is the one that got me the wet saw, and paid my ebay bills. My wife already does beads and wire on bottles and stuff, and going to start incorporating rocks into her wire stuff. Now, my lovely wife is starting to get tired of hearing about the cool shape of this rock, and what we could do with that rock or what is in every tumbler and what stage it's in, and let me add, she is tired of me having to look through this board or ebay before I come to bed every night. She also says I’m obsessed with rocks now, just like she said I was about ponding a couple years ago. Last year she told everyone I was obsessed with the other Jag I bought. All I said about the Jag in my defense was that she looked good riding in it too. I can’t hide buying anything from her, she now takes care of the bills. It’s kinda funny how things work like that. I must say I feel lucky that I found this board, I have learned a lot from all of you here. And everyone here is so nice, I don’t think I have seen any bickering at all. (you should go visit a pond forum) No matter what, people will help you and encourage you here. I feel a good bond with you all, just from reading about you. Funny how that works too. Mostly, Thank you for letting me be a part of your world of rocks…I better end this before I start tearing up….

You sure got that right, Earthdog, about how it seems everyone gets along here. Since I found this board last summer there's only been a few controversies that I can remember. This other board I belonged to got tiring because it seemed no matter what someone said some one would always chime in in disagreement about something. Back to hiding rock related purchases... I know I feel guilty about them sometimes because I'm suppose to be the one who is the fugal one. I thought my husband what the word budget means. He'd probably just laugh at me if I told him about all my purchases. Funny it hasn't occured to him why I didn't give him a hard time when he bought a compound archery bow or the satellite radio this year.

At one time rockhounding was a fairly inexpensive hobby for me. I collected mostly minerals. I'd load up my truck and take off for a few days, stopping here and there to search abandoned mine tailings. The only initial expense was for canvas bags (to transport rocks), a geopick, gas (that's expensive!), and a couple of books to point me in the right direction. Over the last 4 years I have put 83,000 miles on my little Tacoma, thoroughly explored 3 states, accumulated a fair amount of agate, jasper, and petrified wood, and met a lot of cool rock-lovers in the process. Then Santa brought me a brand new tumbler and a whole new rock world opened up. I found this website. Alas, 2 barrels was not enough. I just bought my second rotary, and I've got 4 barrels rolling now. I hope to get a vibratory next month just for polishing. In the mineral shop today, I was mesmorized by a book on cabbing. I dream of altering rocks. I want to drill holes in them. I want to wrap them in silver and gold Celtic knotwork. What's next? Intervention? Susan

Don't worry about that, Duckbean. The longer you're involved in this addiction, the less frequently those moments of sanity will occur. You'll be OK! BE

Gaetz,,,,
Yup that's just about how it goes!! LOL
I have some old Playboy magazines so when I get my Rock and Gem magazines I quick like a bunny rip off the Playboy cover and glue it on the R&G!!LOL
I guess she figures I'm too old to do much damage with the girls so she just let's it go!!
Stefan,,,
About 8 years ago I did the world a favor and quit drinking.
Near the end of my drinking career one recycle bin just wasn't cutting the mustard so I stole 2 bins from my neighbors.
I used 1 bin for the family recycleables and the other 2 were full of 1/2 litre Bacardi Rum bottles and Coke bottles!!
Now when she mentions my rock habit I ask if she wants me to get a couple more bins!!
All I get in return is a grumble, grumble as she walks away!!

To all the "Cheating Women",,,
