Hi everyone, We, (my wife and I) are planning on a trip to Carlsbad Caverns in late April. We both love caves and caverns and thought it would be a great get a way vacation ! Our reservations are already in place and now we are just counting the days From Carlsbad Caverns, we are heading to Santa Fe, New Mexico to meet up with family for a weekend get together at Loretto Chappel, to see the spiral staircase. Us kids (my three sisters and myself) are taking our Mom to see it, after a lifetime desire to see the amazing spiral staircase. This was our gift to Mom at Christmas this year ... needless to say ... she was happy! I have been going through my Rockhounding New Mexico book and trying to plan our travel routes along some of the listed collecting areas ... so it ought to be a great time! My wife has already set a box aside for the rocks that I will be able to gring home ... once the box is full ... that is it ... no more rocks! I have a very bad habbit about filling the food cooler, water jugs (empty of course), shoving them under the seats, totally cover the spare tire, every pouch, door storage ... well ... you see where this is going ;D I have even been known to ship items home from a post office in the area ... so it gives me more room in the car!!! Yea, I need help ... but we are only around for a short time ... we just as well make the best of it ;D I'll keep you up to date and let you know what we found and where. Have a great weekend, John

Oh no, only one box? John that just isn't fair. Hope you made the deal that shipping stuff home is not included in the one box thing.
That was a very lovely gift that you all gave your mother, what a thoughtful thing to do. Sounds like an absolutely wonderful trip and I can assure you I'm totally jealous already .... without even seeing what you bring back. LOL ;D Be sure to let us know when you're leaving.

BCL, I've lived in NM for a long time, I might be able to give you some pointers - the Gem Trails book isn't always that accurate, and I have visited most of the sites therein. I can tell you which are the most productive, and guide you towards particular types of rocks. Do you have 4-wheel drive? Suusan

Have a great time
I will be with you all the way and be sure to post your haul for all of us to see.

Hi everyone,
Well ... I think I might have got the ball rolling in my favor ... I found my wife going through the "where to go looking book" ... and she said ..." we might need a larger box" ... I nearly fell over and threw my arms and legs straight up in the air ;D
I'll have to get with NMrocks and see if the places we are contemplating checking out are worth a darn.
Wish me luck!
John

Being that you'll only be a hop, skip, jump, and a rock's throw, away from the Big Bend area, why not just go down the road to Alpine, TX and visit the Woodward Ranch. You will find lots of excellent agates. Great place for rock hunting and Trey the owner, is one of the best guys you will ever meet.
