I took out my Cape May stuff from the pre-polish last night, and my husband, who is usually uninterested in any of my hobbies was genuinely impressed by how shiny and different they looked. So he starts going thru the stones picking out the ones he liked and he said " Ya know what we should do? We should go to the Delaware Water Gap and find the big stuff and hunt for rocks". Wait it gets better, so then he tells me to go ahead and buy some of that Tigereye and Hematite , a loop and a rock hammer!!! I've had about as bad a couple weeks as a person can have, then I found this site and everyone is so positive and then my husband was excited about something I'm really interested in. It took my mind off my troubles and gave me some hope. Thanks for this site... Marian

Congrats and a warm welcome Marian. This is a very soothing hobby, although it can get frustrating at times, especially in the beginning. Quick, get out the credit card and order that tigereye and hematite, rock hammer and loup, pack up the car and go rockhounding. And have fun!
Welcome, Ed

Marian Check out The Rock Shed for the hematite (see my thread on the Vendor board) Just over $2 a pound including shipping, you should see what's it's going for on ebay! They also sell tigereye, but I haven't compared prices.

They also sell tigereye, but I haven't compared prices. Got 2lbs of the Hematite and the grit pack with pellets from the Rock Shed and am doing a trade for some Tigereye. I also bought a 10x Belomo loop w/ lanyard and a rock hammer from Geo tool and outfitter. I figured I'd better strike while the iron is hot lol! Thank you very much for the info! Marian

We were real caught up in the histroy aspect that I never considered rock hounding! From what I understand, some of the quartz found on the beaches of Cape May come all the way from the DWG. I really want to test this theory, and take some time and just do something relaxing...Man I hope this weather warms up soon... Marian

Marion, That's great! Post some pictures. Whem I was a kid we vacationed just North of Cape May in Wildwood (beautiful unbelievably wide sandy beaches) and my parents would make an annual pilgrammage to Cape May and look at the Victorian Architecture. I always hated that beach(full of rocks not sand). Boy how one's tastes change over the years! csroc

yeah, that beach is full of rocks, everything from quartz, to rubies, beryl, fossilized sharks teeth and whale bones, adventurine, bloodstone, jasper, you name it just keep your head down and you'll find it eventually! There is also a lapidary shop as you come into the parking lot on your left. Wildwood is a BLAST too! It's still got great beaches (no cool rocks drat!) and awesome night life. I just put the stones into polish, I will undoubtedly peek tommorow, so I will take a picture of the batch, well I'll try to Marian

That sounds like a great beach, only sand on the one's where I've been, nothing exciting. Welcome to the board Marian, it's a great place! Bob

It's just a rockhound paradise to me lol! I have a picture of my daughter when she was about 1 1/2 sitting in the rocks there, with a mouthful of gravel lol I'll have to dig it up and scan it for ya'll... I was talking with her the other day (she's going to be sweet 16 this sunday) and in a little ceramic foot shaped bowl she made in 5th grade, she had a tiny stash of rocks she collected over the years from various places. I was shocked she's been a closet rock hound for YEARS!!! She refused to let me have them but that's ok it's just one more thing to add to my happy list this week and one more thing that I can use to relate to my teenager better... Marian ps I bought her a slab of Goldern Picture Tigereye for her birthday, think we'll tumble it together

KD KD, It's quite possible I could hide it but my husband is a carpenter so he just might appreciate the "shiny new power toy" factor lol. I think I'll hold off on anything big for now though, don't want to overwhelm him too soon ;D Marian

Marian, it's incredibly cool to walk in on a Cape May thread. Wow! Parents always took us on CSROK's (is that right?) exact same vacation to Wildwood & always the obligatory side trip down to Cape May and Cape May Point. The first tumbled rocks I ever saw were in the shop you are talking about; I would walk around and watch the floor where there were always a few dropped polished Cape May diamonds, I'd pick them up and rationalize that since on the floor, I was not shoplifting. I still have a little medicine bottle with them in it that I've carried from move to move in a desk drawer. Of course I always picked up stones there with Mom, I've had a wine glass full for years that I always figured I'd put in my tumbler when I got one decades later. And I did use them as fill in an early batch. I've never heard of anyone finding ruby or beryl there, but from reading it sounds like geologically that's quite possible, in fact, pretty much anything might show up. A family member gave me a sackful for Christmas, I haven't been there for at least 10 years but would love to go now that I finally have the tumblers and a MISSION to tumble every rock I can find. Good place to see birds, too. I love watching the concrete ship deteriorate. I have photos from family albums before I was born, through my childhood, and onwards, documenting its breakdown over the years. Also the beach erosion. The Cape May website was the first I'd heard of the current beach restoration efforts. Hope it works. I got the worst jellyfish bite I ever had when just barely into the shallow water at the breakers picking up rocks by the jetty. OUCH! Words to the wise: They'll give you meat tenderizer at the snack bar for free, should you experience this. Unfortunately, it doesn't work.
