My slurry is pretty thick (looks like dirty whipped cream, holds peaks and everything) . and has lots of grit (I recharged the grit with 3 Tablespoons of coarse 2 nights ago).
Is that too thick?
Should I remove some slurry and add water? Or leave it as is?

I think the slurry might be a tad thick. The stones do have to move. I might take some grit out, save it for later, and definately add water. You might be suprised how little water will thin it out however.

Thanks docone.
I'll do that right now.... I'll take pictures of the rocks while I'm at it and post them up in the members photo's section.
Thanks for answering. I really appreciate it.

Sometimes a foam forms on top of your rocks/slurry. If it is the foam that can be formed into peaks, then this means nothing. Ignore the foam. If the actual coarse-grind slurry (ie, the stuff below any surface foam) can be formed into peaks like whipped cream, then that is much, much too thick.
The slurry should be like thin pancake batter -- thick enough to help hold the grit particles in suspension, but not so thick that it slows the tumbling motion in the barrel. If it is too watery, then the grit doesn't stick to the rocks and help to grind them. If it is too thick, then the rocks don't tumble properly and don't wear smooth.

Thanks rolling stone. I'll remember that if I ever question the thickness again.
I had no foam in the barrel, it was the slurry that was too thick.
I ended up taking all the rocks out rinsing them and then putting them back in the barrel after taking some of the grit out. I'm hoping the water which was on the rocks after rinsing them is just enough water to thin it out a little (Docone mentioned that it doesn't take much to thin it). I'll be checking on them in a little bit. If it wasn't enough water, then I'll add a teaspoon or 2

I would say that it is too thick and you need to add some water. Tami
