Me, are the starburst actually fossilized plants? Cross sections of the plants? I've seen other stones with the "starburst" patterns on/in them and they were explained to be cross sections of fossilized plants. So, I was just wondering is that a good assumption of most starburst patterns in stone? Thanks.

Nope, not fossil but rather starburst type crystal growths formed in the rhyolite as it cools. Sort of in the same ballpark with those Japanese chrysanthemum stones and chinese writting stone....mel

Definitely some very impressive starbursts. As a rhyolite, I take it that it requires some care to put a good shine on it? -Don

Don, You know, Sands seems to have no trouble creating fantastic cabs with this stuff but I have always had a booger of a time getting anything more than a satin finish on it. Course well, Sands is Sands. He seems to have the touch to make every stone look spectacular *L*
Debbie: I see it once and awhile on E-Bay but other than that, I don't see it around much anymore. Used to be some fellows from Durango, Mexico that brought in huge rounded boulders of the stuff for the Snyder Ranch Pow Wow here in Calif. I went last year with a pocket full of spending money but they didn't show up....mel

Sorry Fossilman - we're just giving you a hard time because you responded on a nine year old thread. Thread necromancy has been committed haha.

But, once one figures out how to search the archaic archives here, there is a wealth of info.

A lesser possibility is Crystobalite needles as in spherulites, snowflake obsidian, etc.
