Hi Stefan,
Well, I am no help to you on this one ...

Nope, never tried it, but seeing the MOH scale, I would probably treat them the same as emeralds.
just my 2 cents

I think all gems fracture easy (that's what makes them so precious, to have one that hasn't fractured ). Maybe some filler would help?

I ran a little topaz when I first started not knowing what it was. It actually came out pretty good compared to everyting else in the load. The pieces were not very big, and I have some more left over to put in another load. Didn't know it is an 8 on the MOHS. Now I know what to put it with ;D No breakage at all, and I have decided that CO polish works best with MOHS 7.5 or higher.

Funny someone should ask about Topaz. I just finished a load and I was a bit disappointed. They took a long time(8 weeks or so) and alot of them fractured and the ones that are of any clarity are pretty dang small. Here's a pic. I'm going to grind away the bad parts on some of the larger ones and one of these days when I try my hand at faceting, I'll play with these. Actually, there are alot of smaller ones that would look good facetted. But my 2 cents: don't bother. Spend your money on agates. Ed ps. the darker stones are some rubies-another one not to waste your money on.

I did a load or two of topaz and I don't recall whether or not I posted photos. LOL -- they remind you a bit of Cape May Diamonds, for those of us that are following those threads. They look a lot like them only tinted blue or various shades of yellow/gold. They do fracture very easily, worse than most gemstones I've worked with, you do need to use a lot of pellets and handle them gently. I like the end result okay. They polished well. Could have been better shaped, but I really rushed them because something else interesting came along -- ya know how it is.

I thought topaz was yellow (I'm imagining bright yellow like amber)

Yello is the most common color (no wait actually clear is) but it also comes in Blue, Pink, and Lavadar- but most of the colorful stuff is either heat treated or irradiated! I have a nice piece of amber from Brazil that was given to me and I got to thinking who nice some tumbeled stuff would be!
