I posted this somewhere but I think it got lost! Try this- It's pretty cool take to chunks of quartz (any kind but the clearer the better the effect) go into a pitch black room smack the 2 chunks together! (be careful not to hit a finger) Pretty cool HUH it also works with Wintergreen life savers and your teeth (just take a mirror into the dark room and crunch the lifesaver while smiling!) It called tribolumeneces (sp?) Oh it will also work with sugar and a motar and pestel!

i know it works because i sat in the dark laughing for many nights after donwrob posted about this. just as i was beginning to think he was pulling my leg it actually worked. and just in time before my small child thought her mom had lost it standing around in dark closets clunking rocks together.
now the lifesaver i haven't tried.........

I've done the Lifesavers or Certs, but not the rocks.
Here's another, take orange peels and bend them over (peel facing out) until the juice flies out and hit the juice w/ a match and viola, you've got a torch.
I've also heard that if you hold a match up to your ^%#a% and light a match.......well I won't go there......(I'd have to hear docone explain how the release of gasses and electricals relate to each other!!!!!! LOL)

they will also light up if you grind them. I used a 4" Makita grinder with a tile blade in it. I was pre-shaping a couple just before throwing them into the tumbler, it was getting dark and I was in a hurry but when I noticed them glowing I started to pay more attention to what I was doing

That sounds neat. How long did they glow?

as long as you had the wheel touching the stone, you don't need a lot of pressure either- next time I shape up some rock I will try and have my wife film it with my digital camera

Listen to the Gaetzter. What he says is true. A friend of mine did that when I was in the Army and it was wild. It has something to do with methane gas.
