I think I inserted the pictures correctly. I also made them a bit smaller for us folks that are still on dial up! Ok......brand new and still don't have much of a starting point on learning what is in my area. I do have a book ordered that puppie recommended! These are rocks from my first tumbling about a year ago, learned a lot since that batch. The 2 in the very front I am curious about as I find a lot of it. It's not that pretty before polish, but polished great! 2nd row, one on the far left is one I find at near by creeks every so often, not a great one to polish as it's composed of a lot of things. It's beauituful even unpolished. 2nd row, 2nd from right end, has some pyrite I think, it's in my driveway here and there. The rock on the far right 2nd row is basically what my driveway is........wish it was all polished like that! 3rd (top row), far right is all over the creeks here, that is a rock I practiced cutting iwth my tile saw (before I bought a new blade and after cutting ceramic tile for my master bathroom). The other 3 on the 3rd row on the left......far left, not sure w here it came from, next to it is another local creek rock and......... If none others can be identified, really curious about the 2 in front. Thanks from a total newbie!!!!!!!! Once I get a good assortment of Little Piney Rocks together, will take some pics of them in the rough and see if you can help me get started on identifying what I have around here!

My guess for the banded examples would be a very fine grained flint or chert similar to the Flint Ridge , Ohio material....mel

Thanks! I looked up some fine grained flint pictures and I think you are right. But thank you for giving me somewhere to start! I also figured out one of the other rocks in the picture is granite. I thought it was, but wasn't sure. Found some other good pics while surfing around.

Can't help with the ID, but they sure are purdy. It's fun to polish local stuff, huh?

Yep, I have some here now. I traded someone for it. I'm going to the area to eventually get my own pile.......but its tough to do there, most of the locals have the stuff practically guarded!

Looks like the local flint/chert/jasper. I find a lot of the light stripey stuff, especially at Chain of Rocks. Some of it looks like pet wood. Some I am positive is pet wood.
