Hi all, I have followed the wire wrapping forum for many months and am just amazed at what has been produced my RTH members. I purchased some cheap wire and tried to learn myself, but my fingers just do not work like they used to. I have a NICE SIZE beautiful piece of opal that I would love to be wrapped into a ring that would fit me, 10 1/2 ring size. I will have to get the size of the opal when my wife gets home. She is bringing a metric set of caliphers home so I can measure it. I will leave it up to whoever wants to do it decide on what type of wire to use.....I prefer gold. I will gladly pay for both your material used, shipping and of course what ever your cost for making it will be. I over the past couple of years have tried to order a ring finding that I could mount the opal in, however, trying to find a 10 1/2 ring size is almost impossible. I did order a size 10 and 11 finding and of course the one was to small and the other was to large. If anyone is interested please either PM me. thank you, gary

I made one for my dad with a hawk eye that I cabbed - the ring turned out much larger than I anticipated. I have to say it wasn't as hard as I thought to actually do it but being a bit dissapointed with the results (size-wise - not with the ring itself) I'm a bit reluctant to do another - Banjo did one as well like this, his was much better (no comparison whatsoever). doc also does amazing work and a few people have set some in silver Opal is super soft, a colleague of mine ruined a piece by letting it sit upturned for a while - smooshed it out of shape a bit - this particular setting might do the same thing - Here's what i did for my dad - this was a size 13 I think

I was just going to say..........and then saw that tweetie mentioned it, opal is a very soft stone for a ring. Thats why you generally see more opal pendants in jewelry stores rather than rings. Rings take a lot of abuse even if worn only on special occasions. If I was going to have an opal ring it would be an opal triplet to help protect the stone. The quartz cap on the triplet would hold up much better than the opal by itself.

Here's a ring I did like that with an opal for my Mom. It ended up being to big, so I took it apart and made a new one that turned out awesome. She wears it, but you do have to be carefyl with opals on a ring. PS This was like the 2nd thing I ever wrapped and you can tell in this pic. Like I said, when I redid it, it was perfect.

Both of those are beautiful. One of these days I am going to have to start making some rings. Tami

Are you kidding me Tweet? Look at all the tool marks and bens and scratches!! Yours definately looks better than that one! When I see my Mom again, I'll take a new pic of the re-done ring. Stones, give it a try, they're really not that hard, they just look that way.
