I have a couple of pounds of a polish called Barnsite and another called Red Rouge. Any of you familiar with these polishes? How good are they? I've had them for years, but have never used them. I'm thinking of using them in my next tumbling batch.

Isn't that stuff used to polish brass?

I've got some of that red rouge stuff too, came with the used Lortone that I bought. Never tried it though, wasn't sure exactly what it was for. There was also a container that had some plastic pellets in it and they looked red like they'd been tumbled with the red stuff.

Red rouge is commonly used to polish brass, but it will also polish glass. Not sure how it would work on harder stuff in the tumbler, but it doesn't hurt to try. It will probably work slower than cerium or aluminum oxide, so you'll have to give it more time. A word of caution, rouge will permanently stain clothing, so don't wear your Sunday best when working with it.
Barnesite is a polishing compound that used to be used in the optics industry. I'm pretty sure it's no longer being made in the US, according to a friend of mine who used it to polish telescope mirrors (this was about 10 years ago). It fell out of use when faster and cleaner polishes (like cerium oxide) came along.
If you give them a try, let us know how they work...

Red rouge is used to polish metals (usually brass) I tried some on a felt dremel wheel on some quartz and the results were very slow in coming but it did put some shine on it-

DON'T USE the red rouge crap, it turns every tiny fracture red, and you'll never get it out!
It will ruin your stones, trust me, I've done it.
