My wife just bought me 15 pounds of rough and a few pounds of slabs on ebay. Beautiful material, but I don't have a decent slab saw. The largest piece she got was 7 pounds. petwood, owyhee flower, bicolor palm, golden oak I have a few hundred pounds of nice rough including sheeps creek that need to be slabbed. I have been tempted to get a Lortone Panther over the years, but this might push me over the edge. Here's the 7 pound piece of petwood:

I'd suggest that you just keep your eyes open for a good deal on a used saw. Lately, I've seen many people here get GREAT deals. The expense of a new, big saw is pretty hard to justify for a hobbyist.

I occasionally check for saw deals on ebay. The biggest issue is that they are usually pick up and my radius to drive for a saw is limited. The thing I like most about the panther is that is small and fast (and I am impatient by nature). I have heard good and bad things about the saw. I can't afford to retire where I live so I am looking for a saw that I can easily move. My first thought was to by a saw after I relocate, but with the rough piling up I might want to start slabbing sooner.

Well, you could pick-up a WorkForce saw ($88) so that you can start cutting your smaller stuff, and that would buy you time to find a deal on a bigger saw.
You may want to try to find Rockhounding clubs and Gem & Mineral Society chapters in and around your area. A lot of people buy and sell gear as they upgrade or scale-down.
