I live near Knoxville TN, and can't find a local source for tumbler grit. Where do you get yours? Do you buy in bulk?

The only place that I can find it locally... has the lortone 4 part packs... for like $40. Online its $25 or less. So I buy online.... but I get it from therockshed.com (not the lortone stuff...but his bulk stuff) So far I've just bought it in 5lbs per grit size.

dunno what YOU consider "bulk", but Miles Supply has the lowest price for 60/90 in 25 & 50 pound orders (and I checked them all). I just ordered 50 pounds for $52 + shipping. They also sell 220, but it's graded and too expensive to use in a tumbler. Other than that 60/90 deal at Miles, the Rock Shed beat Kingsley North by a good amount on other grit prices. Miles Supply is www.stonetooldepot.com and the grit page is: www.stonetooldepot.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWCATS&Category=305

I also get mine from Miles Supply. A lot cheaper buying it that way.

Wow! Such a deal. Better than Kingsley North at $70 for 50 lbs of 60/90. 60/90 is what I use most of. I'm about 1/2 way through the 50 lbs I bought 3 months ago.

I think my postal carrier/UPS guy would have a fit if I ordered 50 lbs or more of grit! One gal was quite grumpy about a 16 lb FRB.

Goddess... with that new 15# er, you BETTER order it that way, that baby is gonna eat some grit! It will come UPS or FedEx and they have hand trucks (dollys) besides, with that new tumbler going, you will be buying rocks in heavier batches than that now! The grit will be good training for your delivery driver

I only have 3 lb barrels, so I don't buy in bulk. So I buy from Arrowhead Lapidary Supply on the web. Cheapest price I have found, and I had better results than other places. Terry

CaptBob.... I'm still trying to find local sources for rock too! It seems the bigger the city the fewer the rock shops. Well there is one, but they don't have piles and piles of agates.. just small boxes of "gems" (rose quartz, amethyst, etc).

CaptBob.... I'm still trying to find local sources for rock too! uh... How about the folks here? Flat Rate boxes full of rock delivered to your door rule! I was going to post in the swap/sell section about wanting to buy rock from people here, can't we do that? Living in Florida, I can't just go out and find my own (I sure would like to!) And, buying one freakin' rock at a time on eBay is not cost effective. I may be wrong, but logic dictates that there would be more rock available - to buy - from members here than many other places that I might look. Hope that quote thing works, still can't figure out how to quote someone here...

Yeah... I have picked up a FRB from a member here. But I like supporting the folks in my town too. That's why I looked at grit from the local store first... but the best local store I've found mostly sells finished carved pieces. So their supply section is a little tiny corner of a huge shop.

Geogoddess, you might ask them if they can order larger quantities of grits for you. Even if it's a little more expensive, you'll probably make up for it in not paying shipping.

i would like to know how to use the quote too mike I dragged my mouse across your post, and hit the quote thing in the upper RH corner. Let's see if it works? Yep, it did. And I hit 'modify' to add this to my post. I learned something new, again! What fun!
