Question ?
Is it a good idea to grind rough stone then put in 60/90?
or is that a bad thing.

Depends on if you want to shape it or not I guess. I've never done it before the 60/90 but I do quite a bit of shaping with my dremel in between 60/90 and 120/200 grits.

i often preform rock and then tumble it. heck, i've gone all the way through to polish on the grinder and then pop it in the prepolish stage in the tumbler cuz i wasn't 100% happy with it. sometimes it ruins the stone (undercuts it) but sometimes i've reached a good place with the stones. i don't think it matters how you get to where you want, as long as you get the desired result. well, at least when it comes to polished rocks! I break a lot of my tumbling rock with a hammer and chisel, leaves a lot of points and such. Grinding them I think saves me a little time in 60/90. Bob

Dan, As my friend Martha would say "That is a good thing". Preforming will only aid the Tumbling process. You can grind out around hollow areas to make them more accessable to grit and jumpstart the desireable rounding process essential to nicely tumbled stones. csroc

I like to let it run at least a week an 45/70. That kind of gives you an idea of the general shape and layout of the rocks and exposes most imperfections.

Well i put the grinder to use, and did about 2 pounds. Let see if they tumble faster.
