Despite having the lid on tight, my bottle of Tool Magic has gotten thick and unusable. Would acetone be suitable for thinning it?
Thanks,
Shannon

I asked some of my jewelry making friends, as I don't have any experience with the stuff.... and they know everyyyyything. One gal said in the literature that comes with it... it can be thinned with Toulene, Naptha, or Xylene. Unfortunately, I don't know how similar any of those are to Acetone... but maybe it'll help ya.

I think I used mineral spirits to thin mine, I think it had one of those 3 ingredients on the list, so I threw it in and it worked fine. I'm also not sure about the acetone, BUT, scoop a little of the thick stuff out of the can and mix the acetone in and see if it works. You got nothing to lose, it won't explode or anything.

Tool Magic is a rubber coating that you dip pyour wire wrapping pliers in to keep them from marring the wire. I would be lost without mine.
I had read about those three substances mentioned but I also didnt know what any of them were LOL.

Some people use masking tape instead of Tool Magic. Or buy some that are nylon coated, that are more durable than Tool Magic.
Curiosity got the better of me... Wikipedia lists all three as hydrocarbon based solvents for various purposes. Something like paint thinner...but not quite. Home Depot or Lowes ought to have them, if the Acetone doesn't work.

Woah - I just did a quick search on those three items. One of them (Naptha) is basically white gas (Coleman fuel) or lighter fluid from what I can tell. Another one (Toulene) is mentioned as being an ingredient in some nail polish removers. And the last (Xylene) is used as a paint thinner among other things. All very harsh chemicals, in other words.
Granted, Acetone isn't exactly a gentle chemical either, I suppose!

Ive tried tape but have never had satisfactory results. I suppose if I dont want to have to keep dipping into harsh chemicals I might have to invest in nylon coated ones. The nice thing about Tool Magic is that when I am working with very fine chain mail...like 24 gauge, I can use just a very thin coat of Tool Magic so that it doesnt bulk up my really fine small Xuron pliers.

Oh I understand the joys of Tool Magic, I was just surprised at what they recommended as a thinner! I hadn't thought about it before this post...
I tried tape as well, but not with any real success. It bulked up too quickly for me, making it hard to get a tight fit.
