but when i went to the grocery store today.....i noticed about 10 folks had them ....maybe more.....every where i looked i seen women with calculaters...are folks here doing the same thing....maybe not the calculater thing....but looking at prices of stuff in the grocery store?.

Being single, I don't go grocery shopping that often - about every 3 weeks or so. But this time, I have to admit that I put the chicken that I normally purchased back on the meat shelf when I realized it was now $3.00 more than the last time I purchased it and chose a different brand.
So no - I don't grab a calculator when I go grocery shopping, but I am noticing prices on the things I'm purchasing and making decisions along those lines. If had to feed a family and fit a larger grocery bill into my budget, I just might be, though. I might even remember to bring the coupons my brother-in-law clips and sends to me (don't ask) to the store instead of intending to and leaving them on the counter (or bringing them and forgetting to present them during checkout).

i haven't noticed folks with calculators lately, but i remember doing it when i was younger and only had a fixed amount to spend each week. nothing more embarrassing to get to the checkout and be short and then have to put something back.....
i always carry "emergency money" now just in case.
prices of everything at the store much less the gas pumps are nuts. our local gas station went up 10 cent is the space of one day.
when we go shopping for the groceries these days we end up with what is on sale that day. sometimes they have whole chickens for 69-79 cents a pound, so that is a deal. sometimes they have whole pork loins, etc. so we come home, chop'em up into chops and freeze them. we've learned to be a LOT more economical, and not neccesarily by choice!

I noticed that with the debit cards, we seem to spend more, my MIL use to put items back on the shelf at the cash register because she didn,t have enough money, now it seems, if it goes over budget, it's no big deal! Anyone watch "Jon & Kate + 8"? Kate shopped for 2 weeks worth of meals for 9 people (one adult and 8 children) and it cost her $150! She saved like $75 with coupons & other stuff! I don't chase bargains nor use coupons unless they're handed to me at the door, but I always make my "Costco Face" when I get the large bill! I've put back fresh vegetables when the price is ridiculous - and opt for frozen instead... I buy the whole pork loins too to cut them up...

I am an end capper. I buy a ton of what is on sale on the end caps. When I get home I figure how to make it all work. Anything with flower in it has gone way up. With so much corn being used in making gasoline farmers are planting more of it and less of everything else. Can't blame them; they need to make money just like everyone else and last I checked no one was getting rich farming. Anyway, with less wheat and steady demand prices go up. And the increased fuel cost to move the product and you see some big price jumps.

gotta start watching something....i work across town...kid being in summer school....and donna working at night....that explorer is riding all the time....its killing me...$90 a week just for gas.
next time i see 1 in the grocery store with a machine im gonna ask why....which will be probably tommorow...kev.

a lot of that info can be gleaned from reading the tiny labels on the grocery store shelves under most products, KG, cost per oz, etc. i thought most people used calculators so they could keep a running tally of how much they were spending. so, Kev, what did the folks you asked have to say??
enquiring rockhounds need to know!

My grocery store has great end caps. Buy one get two free. They put a max on the amount you can buy; otherwise I would buy like one case and get two cases for free . I guess not all stores have great end caps. Thats good to know cause when I go on vacation down south I'll have to remember that the end caps aren't always the best deal.

come on down south spirit..we aint so bad in person ;D.
well i was told what the deal was today....nobody in the store with machines today so i asked the meat dude what he thought about it.
he said there was some ladies that are showing wifes and girlfriends of recently laid off folks how to safe money since they are now on unemployment...until there spouses get another job.
he said they were basicly teaching...unemployment and economics....and offer money saving tips besides grocery shopping....that seems like a cool thing for them to do...to bad i learned the hard way a while back.
i dont know what they were actually tallying up...ounces...lbs..or what.
and i never noticed if sale prices listed the cost per ounce...i will look next time..... and i will ask what they are adding up next time i see them also...kev.

I do use a calculator sometimes. But most of the time I look at the shelf tag to see the price per ounce or unit. I want the best deal I can get. Alot of the time you think your getting a better deal buy by buying the whopper package. But when you break it down into price per unit/ounce, the big pack is not always the best price. Me and my hubby bought a gallon of oj and it was $3.96. The next week it was $5.94. It does not bother me to whip out my calculator because I am the one paying for my stuff. Everybody has their own way of doing things.
